LIRR Announces Service Plan for AM Rush Hour of Thursday, February 9

Crews Clear Disabled Train from Jamaica Station; Two Tracks Remain Closed as Inspections Continue and Major Storm Approaches

MTA Long Island Rail Road tonight announced that crews continuing to work around-the-clock at Jamaica Station following a derailment of one train car at 4 a.m. on Wednesday, February 8, have cleared the disabled 10-car train from the station. However, two tracks will remain out of service as inspections continue and a major storm approaches.

As a result, the LIRR will cancel nine of the total 144 morning rush hour trains on Thursday, February 9.

Site Restoration Progress

LIRR crews today re-railed the derailed train car and removed the entire train. As a result, the LIRR is now able to operate through Jamaica on seven of the nine tracks at the station.

While work continues, Tracks 7 and 8 remain out of service and the LIRR will continue to experience rush hour capacity restrictions in Jamaica until further notice.

As a result, for the morning rush hour of Thursday, February 9, the LIRR will cancel nine trains as follows. As noted below, nine trains that depart generally within 10 minutes will make additional stops to help accommodate the customers of the canceled trains.

Many Channels for Services Updates

The LIRR urges its customers to gather information about transportation status and options on Monday morning before heading out. The LIRR will update customers in these ways:

  • MTA.info. The rail tab of the “Service Status” box at the left side of www.MTA.info is always the definitive source for the latest status for each branch, updated every minute. In addition, customers can visit www.mta.info/lirr to see special service notices in the upper center of the page.
  • Email and text message service updates. Customers are urged to sign up to receive the alerts by visiting MyMTAAlerts.com. To avoid unwanted messages, a user can tailor the messages to the specific branch, and the specific times of day.
  • @LIRR on Twitter. Twitter users can follow @LIRR to receive updates of a similar nature to the email and text alerts, shortened to fit Twitter’s format.
  • LIRR Train Time™. Customers who use the LIRR Train Time™ app will see up-to-the-minute status for each upcoming train at each station. As a caution, trains that start out their trips on time may experience delays en route.
  • News media reports. LIRR customers are urged to listen to traffic and transit updates as the railroad will keep the media updated as new information becomes available.

The above communications channels can be accessed while at home or on the go. For customers who are located at stations, the LIRR will post the latest service updates on digital signs at station platforms and will make audio announcements over public address systems, and on-board announcements made by train crews.
