MTA Announces Service Plans for Memorial Day Weekend

LIRR & Metro-North to Provide Early Getaway Trains on Friday, May 27

 

Memorial Day is coming on Monday, May 30, which means the MTA will add extra trains tomorrow, Friday, May 27, to help New Yorkers get an early start on the long three-day weekend. On Memorial Day, most MTA services will operate on Sunday schedules. Details are below.
 
Long Island Rail Road
 
On Friday, May 27, the LIRR will provide 10 additional early-afternoon trains from Penn Station, for customers planning an early start to the Memorial Day Weekend. The LIRR will operate on a regular weekend schedule on Saturday and Sunday and on a holiday schedule on Memorial Day.

Metro-North Railroad
 
On Friday, May 27, Metro-North will provide 17 extra “getaway” departures from Grand Central Terminal between 1 p.m. and 4 p.m., and one extra departure from Hoboken Terminal on Metro-North’s Port Jervis Line. On Memorial Day, Monday, May 30, a Sunday schedule will be in effect.

Staten Island Railway
 
MTA Staten Island Railway will operate its Early Departure Get Away schedule on Friday, May 27. This schedule means extra SIR trains will be added earlier in the afternoon beginning at 2:30 p.m. from the St. George Ferry Terminal. There will be one express train and one local train awaiting every boat until 7:50 p.m.

New York City Subway
 
On Memorial Day, Monday, May 30, New York City Transit Subways will operate on a Sunday schedule. Customers are reminded to use the a, c, d or q instead of the b, and the j instead of the z.  Express service is not available on the 6 and 7. In addition, on Sundays, some subway routes are shortened. 
 
The following diversions are in effect on Memorial Day through 5:00 a.m. Tuesday, May 31:
 
  • 34 trains skip Saratoga Av and Pennsylvania Av in both directions.
  • 4 trains are suspended in both directions between New Lots Av/Crown Hts-Utica Av and Bowling Green. 3service will operate to/from New Lots Av all weekend replacing the 4 in Brooklyn.
  • Downtown 46 trains run express from 125 St to Grand Central-42 St. 
  • 5 trains are suspended in both directions between Eastchester-Dyre Av and E 180 St. 
  • Brooklyn-bound ac trains run express from 59 St-Columbus Circle to Canal St.   
  • ef trains run local in both directions between Queens Plaza and Forest Hills-71 Av in Queens.
  • Brooklyn-bound f trains are rerouted via the e line from Roosevelt Av to W 4 St-Wash Sq, and then via the a to Jay St-MetroTech. 
  • Manhattan-bound j trains run express from Myrtle Av to Marcy Av.
  • l trains skip Wilson Av in both directions. 
  • Manhattan-bound n trains skip 86 St, Avenue U, Kings Hwy, 20 Av, 18 Av, New Utrecht Av, and Fort Hamilton Pkwy.  n trains will stop at Bay Pkwy and 8 Av.
  • q trains run to/from Coney Island via the d and n in Brooklyn.  q trains are suspended in both directions between Kings Hwy and Atlantic Av-Barclays Ctr. Shuttle trains operate between Coney Island-Stillwell Av and Kings Hwy. Free shuttle buses operate between Kings Hwy and Atlantic Av-Barclays Ctr. 
 
MTA Bridges and Tunnels
 
MTA Bridges and Tunnels will suspend all scheduled maintenance work beginning 6 a.m. on Friday, May 27, through the end of the morning rush on Tuesday, May 31, to accommodate motorists traveling throughout the busy travel weekend. Any extraordinary weather-critical work that must be accomplished over the holiday weekend would occur only during overnight hours when traffic is at its lightest. Motorists can ease their trip by using EZPass.
