New Olympic Center Marquee Shining Brightly

LAKE PLACID, N.Y. --- Lake Placid, N.Y. bid farewell to its more than 30 year-old marquee today, Friday, Nov. 21, and welcomed in a new state-of-the-art marquee in front of its famed Olympic Center.

Gone is the text only and light-bulb technology that promoted concerts, events, races and more that came through the Lake Placid region through the years. In its place is a more energy-efficient LED technology that will look like a television and allow for advertisements, graphics and logos.

Replacing the old marquee took less than a week to complete. Northeastern Sign, of Colton, N.Y., began tearing down the old sign on Monday and by Friday morning the new marquee was in place displaying events, activities and welcoming guests to the village.

“The old marquee served its purpose, promoting hundreds, if not thousands, of events and activities that have come through Lake Placid over the past 30-plus years,” said New York State Olympic Regional Development Authority (ORDA) president/CEO Ted Blazer.  “Time and technology have changed and this new marquee will give us greater opportunity and options, to promote World Cup events and races, events taking place on ORDA’s Olympic venues and much more.”

Paid for through ORDA’s capital improvement funds, the 16-millimeter LED marquee will use two-thirds less energy than the previous marquee and produce over 144 quadrillion shades of color. It will also have the ability to show 30-frames-per-second of video.
