PHOTOS: MTA Completes Station Rehabilitation at 138 St-Grand Concourse 45 Station

The Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) today announced that New York City Transit crews completed subway rehabilitation work at the 138 St-Grand Concourse 45 station. Station upgrades such as repainting and retiling are usually done while transit crews are already completing other projects to ensure stations are closed for the shortest amount of time possible. Crews were able to complete the station enhancements at 138 St-Grand Concourse while planned work revamping a pump room nearby was already underway.

“New York City Transit is dedicated to providing customers with fast, reliable and safe service, and that begins with our station environment,” said NYC Transit President Demetrius Crichlow. “With a new coat of paint, brighter lights, and new flooring, customers can immediately experience a cleaner, brighter, and safer trip.”

“Modern, well-maintained, and inviting stations play a key role in creating the quality experience New Yorkers expect and deserve,” said NYC Transit EVP, Subways Bill Amarosa Jr. “Delivering refreshed stations shows we’re taking a comprehensive approach to enhancing the rider experience at every stage of their trip.”

More than 35,000 square feet of ceilings, walls, mezzanines, fencing, gates, floors, and entrance structures were given a facelift and were cleaned and repainted. On top of ensuring all station specific maintenance, crews also painted five trash receptacles, two refuse boxes, and one sand box. In addition, 12 doors were painted and fortified. Around 1,000 square feet of rubbing board were inspected and fortified, which allowstrains to safely enter and exit the station without causing damage to the train or the platform. 50 square feet of vinyl composition tile flooring, 65 square feet of damaged concrete flooring, and 75 square feet of missing wall tiles were all replaced, preventing tripping hazards and improving the physical appearance of the station. Crews also cleaned 13 drains, fixed and installed 1,000 feet of LED rope lights, and replaced corroded expansion plates which allow the tracks to safely expand and contract due to temperature changes.

More About Station Improvement Projects
New York City Transit has completed projects at more than 180 stations across the city, including:
  • 6.3 million square feet of repainted surfaces
  • 120K square feet of wall tile replaced
  • 35K square feet of floor tile replaced
  • Over 4,000 drains cleaned
  • Over 900 benches refinished
  • Over 250K linear feet of rubbing board inspected/repaired

"The newly renovated 138 St–Grand Concourse station gives South Bronx commuters the well-maintained stop they deserve. New York City Transit crews refreshed more than 35,000 square feet of the station and limited disruption by timing the work with nearby pump room repairs,” said Representative Ritchie Torres. “Families across the borough depend on the subway to get to work and school, and they deserve a commute that is both safe and dignified. Replacing damaged tile and flooring eliminates tripping hazards and gives riders a cleaner, better-kept place to start and end their day. I'm grateful to the MTA and the transit workers who made this happen, and I will keep pushing for every subway station in the Bronx to receive the same level of care.”

“South Bronx riders deserve stations that are safe, clean, reliable and reflective of the communities they serve," said Assembly Member Amanda N. Septimo. “A well-maintained station is not a luxury. It is a basic part of a transit system that millions of New Yorkers depend on every day. The work completed at 138th Street represents the kind of continued investment that makes a meaningful difference for riders, from the improvements they see and experience to the critical infrastructure working behind the scenes. I thank the MTA and the transit crews who delivered these upgrades, and I look forward to continuing our partnership to build a safer, more accessible and more reliable transit system for the South Bronx.”

“The rehabilitation of the 138th Street Station is a significant upgrade for our Bronx transit riders, making the station brighter, cleaner, and more welcoming for commuters,” said Bronx Borough President Vanessa L. Gibson. “Thank you to the MTA for ensuring the infrastructure upgrades keep pace with the needs of our communities and for their continued commitment to modernizing our transit system.”
