Ironworkers Recruit Apprentices

Buffalo, NY (August 17, 2021) - The Joint Apprenticeship and Training Committee (JATC) for Ironworkers, Local Union #9, will conduct a recruitment from October 1, 2021 through September 30, 2022 for 20 Ironworker (Outside) apprentices, the New York State Department of Labor announced today.

Applications can be obtained in person at the JATC, Local Union #9, 412 39th Street, Niagara Falls, NY 14303, from 9:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. on the first Friday of each month, excluding legal holidays, during the recruitment period. Applications are also available online during the recruitment period at www.ironworkers9.org. Applicants must download and print the online application to complete it. A resume must be submitted at the time of submitting an application. Completed applications and resumes can be dropped off in person at 412 39th Street, Niagara Falls, NY 14303, Monday through Friday (excluding legal holidays) between the hours of 7:30 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. Completed applications and resumes can also be mailed to the same address. All applications must be postmarked no later than September 30, 2022.

The Committee requires that applicants:

  • Must be at least 18 years old.
  • Must have a high school diploma or a high school equivalency diploma (such as TASC or GED). Proof will be required after selection and prior to enrollment in apprenticeship.
  • Must take a TABE test (Math, Mechanical Aptitude and Reading Comprehension).
  • Must pass a drug test and a physical agility test, at the expense of the sponsor, after selection and prior to enrollment in apprenticeship.
  • Must have a valid NYS driver’s license. Apprentices may be required to drive company vehicles.
  • Must have reliable transportation to and from various job sites and required classes at the approved school.
  • Must reside within the jurisdiction of Local Union #9, which includes:
    • The counties of Niagara and Orleans
    • The towns of Yates, Shelby, Ridgeway, and Grand Island north of Whitehaven Road.
  • Must be a U.S. citizen or have the legal right to work in the USA.
  • Must provide military transfer card or discharge form DD-214, if applicable. Proof will be required after selection and prior to enrollment in apprenticeship.

Apprentice programs registered with the Department of Labor must meet standards established by the Commissioner. Under state law, sponsors of programs cannot discriminate against applicants because of race, creed, color, national origin, age, sex, disability, or marital status. Women and minorities are encouraged to submit applications for apprenticeship programs. Sponsors of programs are required to adopt affirmative action plans for the recruitment of women and minorities.
