To help New Yorkers kick off a long Labor Day weekend and enjoy the unofficial end of summer, the Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) will provide extra service on Friday, Aug. 30, and suspend lane closures at its bridges and tunnels for the whole weekend. All MTA services will operate on special schedules on Labor Day, Monday, Sept. 2.

 

Details about the special service will be available in real time for customers using the MYmta app and MTA.info website. An overview follows.

 

In partnership with the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, the LaGuardia Link Q70 SBS will be free of charge on Labor Day weekend through 11:59 p.m. on Monday, Sept. 2. This is to encourage the use of transit to and from the airport and reduce roadway congestion at the airport during the busy holiday travel periods.

 

 

On Friday, Aug. 30, the Long Island Rail Road will offer eight extra afternoon trains from Penn Station between 2 and 4 p.m. Metro-North Railroad will offer 17 extra afternoon trains departing Grand Central Terminal between 1 and 4 p.m., and two extra departures from Hoboken Terminal, on the Port Jervis Line and Pascack Valley Line. Some early-evening peak trains departing from Grand Central Terminal and Hoboken Terminal will be canceled or combined to allow the railroad to operate the earlier trains and in anticipation of reduced ridership during the later period. Staten Island customers looking to get a head start on the three-day weekend will be able to catch extra afternoon service on four express bus routes and the Staten Island Railway. Extra SIR trains will be added in the afternoon beginning at 2:30 p.m. from the St. George Ferry Terminal. There will be one express train and one local train awaiting every boat until 7:50 p.m. 

 

Extra Staten Island-bound trips on the SIM1C, SIM3C, SIM33C and SIM4C routes begin operating from 23rd Street or from Chambers Street at the following times:

 

 

On Labor Day, Monday, Sept. 2, the New York City Subway, New York City buses, Metro-North Railroad and Staten Island Railway will operate on a Sunday schedule. As a reminder, some subway lines do not run on weekends, and customers are advised to allow additional travel time due to weekend work.

 

The LIRR and Metro-North’s Port Jervis Line and Pascack Valley Line will operate on holiday schedules. Metro-North will add an extra inbound train departing Port Jervis at 4:09 p.m. for those heading back to Hoboken or Manhattan.

 

The MTA and NYPD are working closely to ensure safe pedestrian flow at the J’Ouvert Parade and the West Indian-American Day Parade.

 

The J’Ouvert Parade will be held on Monday, Sept. 2, from 6 a.m. to 11 a.m. in Brooklyn. As a reminder, the Manhattan-bound platform at Sterling St is closed due to ongoing station rehabilitation work. As an alternative, for service to Sterling St, take a Manhattan-bound  train to President St and transfer to a Flatbush Av-Brooklyn College-bound . Or, use nearby Winthrop St or President St stations. For service from Sterling St, take a Flatbush Av-Brooklyn College-bound  train to Winthrop St and transfer to a Manhattan-bound . Buses in the area will be rerouted. The following bus routes in the parade area may be subject to delays and reroutes: B12, B14, B17, B41, B43, B44, B44 SBS, B45, B46, B46 SBS, B48, B49, B67 and B69.

 

Because of the West Indian-American Day Parade on Monday, Sept. 2, from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. along Eastern Parkway in Brooklyn, certain subway entrances in the parade area may be affected and buses in the parade area will be rerouted. The Eastern Parkway-Brooklyn Museum  station will be closed and bypassed from 6 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday, Sept. 2. As an alternative, customers are advised to use the nearby Grand Army Plaza or Franklin Av stations instead. At the Crown Hts-Utica Av  station, certain staircases will be designated entrance/exit only.  trains will make all local stops in Brooklyn. Buses that serve the area will be affected by reroutes, detours, and frozen zones. Customers should anticipate bus detours and delays on the following routes: B12, B14, B17, B41, B43, B44, B44 SBS, B46, B46 SBS, B48, B49, B67 and B69.

 

As a reminder, MTA NYC Transit is enhancing service this summer on the Rockaway Park/Beach 116 St S shuttle, which is extended to Rockaway Blvd to facilitate beach traffic to the peninsula. Customers can take any train to connect with the shuttle at Rockaway Blvd. This seasonal service runs from approximately 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. on Saturdays and Sundays, including Labor Day.

 

 

To accommodate motorists traveling for the Labor Day holiday weekend, MTA Bridges and Tunnels will suspend all lane closures related to routine maintenance and temporary construction work beginning at 1 p.m. on Friday, Aug. 30, through the end of the morning rush on Tuesday, Sept. 3. Any extraordinary weather-critical work that must be accomplished over the holiday weekend would occur only during overnight hours when traffic is at its lightest.
