Roofers Recruit Apprentices

Hauppauge, NY (July 22, 2013) – The United Union of Roofers, Waterproofers, and Allied Workers, Local Union #154 Joint Apprenticeship Training Committee, will conduct a recruitment from July 30, 2013 through July 29, 2014 for five roofer apprentices, State Labor Commissioner Peter M. Rivera announced today.

Applications can be obtained at the Roofers Local Union #154, 370 Vanderbilt Motor Parkway, Suite 1 Rear, Hauppauge, NY, from 2:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. on Tuesdays and Thursdays, excluding legal holidays, during the recruitment period.  Applications must be received no later than July 29, 2014.

The Committee requires that applicants:

  • Must be at least 18 years old.
  • Must have a high school diploma or a General Equivalency Diploma (G.E.D.) - proof of diploma required once accepted into the program.
  • Must have reliable transportation to and from job sites and related instruction.
  • Must be physically able to perform the work of a roofer, as determined by a physical exam to be completed prior to the start of work and paid for by Local Union #154.
  • Must reside within the jurisdiction of Local Union #154 at the time of application.  This includes Nassau and Suffolk counties.
  • Must provide proof of residence (two items other than driver’s license and car registration), once accepted into the program.
  • Must provide military transfer or discharge form DD-214, if applicable.

Apprentice programs registered with the Department of Labor must meet standards established by the Commissioner.  Under state law, sponsors of programs cannot discriminate against applicants because of race, creed, color, national origin, age, sex, disability, or marital status.  Women and minorities are encouraged to submit applications for apprenticeship programs.  Sponsors of programs are required to adopt affirmative action plans for the recruitment of women and minorities.
