Plumbers & Steamfitters Recruit Apprentices

Oswego, NY (January 27, 2014) -- The Plumbers & Steamfitters Joint Apprenticeship Committee Local Union #73 will conduct a limited application recruitment from February 3, 2014 through February 14, 2014 for six plumber-steamfitter apprentices, State Labor Commissioner Peter M. Rivera announced today. 

Applications may be obtained at Local Union #73, 705 East Seneca Street, Oswego, NY, during the hours of 8:30 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. Monday through Friday during the recruitment period.  Applications must be requested in person.  Applications will be available, and accepted, during the recruitment period, or until 100 applications have been issued, whichever occurs first.

The Committee requires that applicants:

  • Must be at least 18 years old; proof is required upon acceptance into the program.
  • Must be a high school graduate or have a high school equivalency (GED) certificate; proof is required upon acceptance into the program.
  • Must appear for an interview when notified.
  • Must be physically able to perform the work required, as determined by applicant’s statement regarding the following:
    • Must be able to perform moderate to heavy lifting
    • Must be able to work in confined spaces
    • Must be able to work off ladders and scaffolding at various heights 
    • Must be able to work in extreme cold and heat
  • Must possess a valid driver’s license to operate company vehicles.
  • Must submit military transfer or discharge form DD-214 (if applicable), upon acceptance into the program.
  • Must take and pass a drug test administered to all apprentices, upon acceptance into the program.
  • Must have reliable transportation to and from job sites and related instruction classes.
  • Must be willing to obligate $50.00 per year for related instruction text material.

Apprentice programs registered with the Department of Labor must meet standards established by the Commissioner.  Under state law, sponsors of programs cannot discriminate against applicants because of race, creed, color, national origin, age, sex, disability or marital status.  Women and minorities are encouraged to submit applications for apprenticeship programs.  Sponsors of programs are required to adopt affirmative action plans for the recruitment of women and minorities.
