Laborers Recruit Apprentices

Niagara Falls, NY (August 26, 2013) – The Joint Apprenticeship Committee of the Educational and Training Fund of Laborers, Local Union # 91, will conduct a recruitment from September 3, 2013 through August 5, 2014 for four skilled construction craft laborer apprentices, State Labor Commissioner Peter M. Rivera announced today. 

Applications will be available in-person only at Local Union #91, 4500 Witmer Industrial Estates, Niagara Falls, NY, from 8:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. on the first Tuesday of each month, excluding legal holidays, during the recruitment period (when a holiday falls on the first Tuesday, applications will be available the second Tuesday of that month). Applications must be completed in-person and on-site.

The Committee requires that all applicants:

  • Must be at least 18 years old; proof of age is required.
  • Must have a high school diploma or general equivalency diploma (G.E.D.); proof required.
  • Must have a medical examination by an approved provider, after indenture into the program.
  • Must be physically able to perform the duties of a skilled construction craft laborer by signing an affidavit that attests to the ability to:
    • Lift, carry twenty-five (25) feet, and restack to a height of approximately fifty-four (54) inches, ten (10) ninety-four (94) pound sacks.
    • Load with a shovel one-half (1/2) cubic yard of material into a wheelbarrow, wheel thirty (30) feet and deposit into a container.
    • Work at heights of ten (10) feet or greater.
    • Work in confined spaces.
  • Must agree to a post-acceptance drug test, to be randomly administered and paid for by the Union.
  • Must have reliable transportation to work and related educational training.

Apprentice programs registered with the Department of Labor must meet standards established by the Commissioner.  Under state law, sponsors of programs cannot discriminate against applicants because of race, creed, color, national origin, age, sex, disability or marital status.  Women and minorities are encouraged to submit applications for apprenticeship programs.  Sponsors of programs are required to adopt affirmative action plans for the recruitment of women and minorities.
