Ironworkers Recruit Apprentices

Utica, NY (September 20, 2013) - The Ironworkers Joint Apprenticeship Committee, Local Union #440 (District I - Utica), will conduct a recruitment from September 30, 2013 through October 3, 2014 for five ironworker (outside) apprentices, State Labor Commissioner Peter M. Rivera announced today. 

Applications will be available at the office of Local Union #440, 801 Varick Street, 2nd Floor, Utica, NY from 8:30 a.m. to 12:00 p.m., Monday through Friday, excluding legal holidays, during the recruitment period.  Applications can also be obtained by calling the Union Hall at (315) 735-4531.  All applications must be received no later than October 10, 2014.

The Committee requires that applicants:

  • Must be at least 18 years old.
  • Must have a high school diploma or General Equivalency Diploma (G.E.D).
  • Must be physically able to perform the work required of an ironworker, as determined by a post-offer of employment physical and a drug test administered by a physician.
  • Must be able to lift 30-100 lbs., climb, and work from heights in excess of 100 feet.
  • Must be a resident of Local #440’s jurisdiction, which includes all of St. Lawrence and Franklin counties, and the following townships:
    • Hamilton County - townships of Long Lake.
    • Jefferson County - townships of Antwerp, Philadelphia, Wilna, Champoin, Copenhagen and West Carthage.
  • Must provide proof of their ability to work in the United States, if selected for the program.
  • Must provide proof of: diploma/GED, birth certificate, military transfer card or discharge form DD214 (if applicable), current certifications, driver’s license, and Social Security card, if selected for the program.

Apprentice programs registered with the Department of Labor must meet standards established by the Commissioner.  Under state law, sponsors of programs cannot discriminate against applicants because of race, creed, color, national origin, age, sex, disability, or marital status.  Women and minorities are encouraged to submit applications for apprenticeship programs.  Sponsors of programs are required to adopt affirmative action plans for the recruitment of women and minorities.
