Sheet Metal Workers Recruit Apprentices

Rochester, NY (March 18, 2014) – The Sheet Metal Workers Local Union No. 46 Joint Apprenticeship Training Committee will conduct a recruitment from April 1, 2014 through March 3, 2015 for 10 sheet metal worker apprentices, State Labor Commissioner Peter M. Rivera announced today.

Applications may be obtained at Local Union #46, 244 Paul Road, Rochester, NY from 9:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. and 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. on the first Tuesday of each month, excluding legal holidays, during the recruitment period.  Applicants must apply in person at address listed above; applications may not leave the premises.

The Committee requires that applicants:

  • Must be at least 18 years old.
  • Must have a high school diploma or General Equivalency Diploma (G.E.D) with one year of algebra with a passing grade; or a passing grade in Math Course I or Math Course II; or a minimum of 55 on the G.E.D. math test.
  • Must be physically able to perform the work required, as determined by a signed affidavit attesting to physical ability to perform the work of a sheet metal worker.  Work in the sheet metal industry may be physical and strenuous.  It can involve the following:
    • Climbing ladders, scaffolds and roofs.
    • Working at great heights.
    • Lifting materials in excess of 70 lbs.
    • Frequently working outdoors in all types of weather.
  • Must take and pass drug test prior to employment; additional drug tests may be administered at any time during the apprenticeship and may also be required at some job sites.  
  • Must have a valid NYS driver’s license, if driving a company vehicle.
  • Must have reliable transportation to and from job sites and related instruction.
  • Must have resided at least one year in one of the following counties:  Monroe, Wayne, Livingston, Ontario, Seneca, or Yates.

Apprentice programs registered with the Department of Labor must meet standards established by the Commissioner. Under state law, sponsors of programs cannot discriminate against applicants because of race, creed, color, national origin, age, sex, disability or marital status. Women and minorities are encouraged to submit applications for apprenticeship programs. Sponsors of programs are required to adopt affirmative action plans for the recruitment of women and minorities.
