BACKGROUND FOR ADVANCE NOTICES, STORIES
Mayor Rosmilia is one of more than 30,000 homeowners in Rensselaer County who qualify for the Basic STAR exemption.  (There are an additional 54,000 Basic STAR recipients in Albany County).

The Tax Department is in the midst of a statewide campaign to register 2.6 million homeowners currently receiving the Basic STAR tax exemption – all of whom must register with the Department to continue receiving the exemption in 2014, and beyond.  The registration facilitates Governor Cuomo’s initiative to protect New Yorkers from fraud and waste in the STAR Program.

The registration deadline is December 31.  The online registration at the Department’s Web site – www.tax.ny.gov – will take most homeowners only two to four minutes.  Homeowners without access to the Internet can register with a Department representative by calling 518-457-2036.

The average homeowner saves $700 as a result of the Basic STAR exemption, which is available only on the primary residence of homeowners with incomes under $500,000.  The registration applies only to Basic STAR recipients; senior citizens receiving the Enhanced STAR exemption are not impacted.
