ATTENTION The New York State Department of Taxation and Finance will host a STAR Registration event from 6:00 – 8:00 pm at Troy City Hall, 5th Floor, Hedley Building, 433 River Street, on Thursday, September 12. (Parking for the press and public directly across the street). Troy Mayor Lou Rosamilia will register for his Basic STAR exemption at 7:30 pm. STAR experts from the Tax Department will be available to register all Basic STAR recipients who come to City Hall between 6 pm and 8 pm. Homeowners only need to bring the social security numbers of all the owners and their spouses. This event gives you an opportunity to interview and tape the Mayor, an agency official, and willing homeowners. CONTACT BACKGROUND FOR ADVANCE NOTICES, STORIES The Tax Department is in the midst of a statewide campaign to register 2.6 million homeowners currently receiving the Basic STAR tax exemption – all of whom must register with the Department to continue receiving the exemption in 2014, and beyond. The registration facilitates Governor Cuomo’s initiative to protect New Yorkers from fraud and waste in the STAR Program. The registration deadline is December 31. The online registration at the Department’s Web site – www.tax.ny.gov – will take most homeowners only two to four minutes. Homeowners without access to the Internet can register with a Department representative by calling 518-457-2036. The average homeowner saves $700 as a result of the Basic STAR exemption, which is available only on the primary residence of homeowners with incomes under $500,000. The registration applies only to Basic STAR recipients; senior citizens receiving the Enhanced STAR exemption are not impacted. ADDITIONAL RESOURCES
