Finishing Trades Institute of Western and Central New York Recruit Apprentices

Ithaca NY (February 21, 2014) - The Finishing Trades Institute of Western and Central New York (Ithaca) will conduct a continuous recruitment from March 3, 2014 through February 27, 2015 for four painter, decorator and paperhanger apprentices and two glazier apprentices, State Labor Commissioner Peter M. Rivera announced today.

Applications will be available at the following times and locations, excluding legal holidays, during the recruitment period:

Workforce Development, 318 Madison Ave., Elmira, NY.  Applications may be obtained Monday through Friday from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.  Applications will be accepted on the 2nd Thursday of each month from 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m.

622 W. State Street, Suite 2, Ithaca, NY. Applications can only be obtained and handed in on the 1st Thursday of each month from 4 p.m. – 6 p.m. during the open recruitment.

NYS DOL, 171 Front Street, Binghamton, NY. Applications may be obtained Monday through Friday from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.  Applications will be accepted on the 2nd Wednesday of each month from 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m.

The Committee requires that applicants:

  • Must be at least 17 years old.
  • Must have a high school diploma or General Equivalency Diploma (G.E.D).
  • Must be legally able to work in the United States.
  • Must be physically able to perform the work required, as determined by applicant’s written attestation.  Physical examination, including drug screening, may be required at time of indenture.
  • Must meet the physical demands of the job, which requires climbing and working from ladders, scaffolds, poles or towers of various heights.  Must be able to crawl and work in confined spaces.  Must be able to do heavy work (defined as frequent lifting of 50 lbs.; infrequent lifting of less than 100 lbs.; walking fast on a surface, and carrying up to 50 lbs.).   
  • Must possess a valid NYS driver’s license.
  • Must have unlimited, unrestricted access to reliable transportation to get to and from various job sites throughout Central New York and related instruction in Geneva, NY - at one week intervals.

Apprentice programs registered with the Department of Labor must meet standards established by the Commissioner. Under state law, sponsors of programs cannot discriminate against applicants because of race, creed, color, national origin, age, sex, disability or marital status. Women and minorities are encouraged to submit applications for apprenticeship programs. Sponsors of programs are required to adopt affirmative action plans for the recruitment of women and minorities.
