Laborers Recruit Apprentices

Bohemia (January 31, 2023) – The Joint Apprenticeship and Training Committee for Road and Heavy Construction Laborers, Local Union #1298, will conduct a recruitment from April 5, 2023 through May 3, 2023 for 25 Skilled Construction Craft Laborers, the New York State Department of Labor announced today.

Applications may be obtained in person at Local Union #1298, 1611 Locust Avenue, Bohemia, NY, Monday through Friday from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. and 1:00 p.m. to 2:00 p.m. during the recruitment period. This is a limited-application recruitment. Only 350 applications will be distributed, on a first-come, first-serve basis. The recruitment will be offered for 10 business days or until 350 applications have been issued, whichever comes first. All applications must be received no later than May 5, 2023.

The Committee requires that applicants:

  • Must be at least 18 years old.
  • Must have a high school diploma or a high school equivalency diploma (such as TASC or GED).
  • Must sign an affidavit stating that they are physically able to perform the work of a Skilled Construction Craft Laborer, which may include:
    • Working an 8-hour day continually on their feet.
    • Lifting and carrying weights in excess of 50 lbs. for extended periods.
    • Working in trenches and excavations up to 20 feet in depth.
    • Working at heights of 20 feet on scaffold or platforms.
    • Working in restrictive or confined spaces.
  • Must have reliable means of transportation to and from various job sites and required classes at the approved school.
  • If accepted into the apprenticeship program, must become a union member and remain in good standing while in the program.
  • Must be legally able to work in the United States.
  • Must provide DD-214, Certificate of Release or Discharge from Active Duty, if applicable, after selection and prior to enrollment in apprenticeship.

Apprentice programs registered with the Department of Labor must meet standards established by the Commissioner. Under state law, sponsors of programs cannot discriminate against applicants because of race, creed, color, national origin, age, sex, disability, or marital status. Women and minorities are encouraged to submit applications for apprenticeship programs. Sponsors of programs are required to adopt affirmative action plans for the recruitment of women and minorities.
