Electricians Recruit Apprentices

Orchard Park, NY (September 25, 2013) - The International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers Joint Apprenticeship and Training Committee, Local Union #41, will conduct a recruitment from October 2, 2013 through September 24, 2014 for four electrician (house or residential) apprentices, State Labor Commissioner Peter M. Rivera announced today.

Applications can be obtained at the Local Union #41, S-3546 California Road, Orchard Park, NY, from 1:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. on Wednesdays of each month, excluding November 27, 2013, December 25, 2013 and January 1, 2014, during the recruitment period. Applicants must apply in person.

Applicants must forward all documents, official transcripts, and evidence that they meet the “minimum qualifications” as listed below, no more than 30 days from the date they obtain their application, by U.S. Mail to: Recruitment, Electrical Industry Education Fund, S-3546 California Road, Orchard Park, NY 14127. Applications and supporting documents will not be accepted by any other means (including hand-delivered).

To qualify for an oral interview, an applicant must meet the minimum qualifications as listed below.  In lieu of items (d), (e), and (f) below, an applicant must provide a minimum of twenty-four hundred hours (2,400 hours) of residential work experience.  The applicant must provide the JATC with proper documentation that defines their experience in the residential industry.  This documentation must be comprised of official documents, such as tax/payroll records, notarized letters of experience confirmation, and sworn statements.  The JATC will examine all submitted documentation before qualification is acknowledged.

The Committee requires that applicants:

  1. Must be at least 17 years old – applicants must be a minimum of 18 years of age at time of selection and indenture.
  2. Must complete an application form, that includes statements indicating that they are:
    • physically and mentally able to safely perform or learn to safely perform essential functions of the job;
    • able to climb and work from ladders, scaffolds, poles and towers of various heights;
    • able to crawl and work in confined spaces, such as attics, manholes and crawlspaces;
    • able to read, hear and understand instructions and warnings;
    • able to get to and from work at job sites anywhere within the geographical area that this apprenticeship program covers;
    • able and willing to attend all related instruction and classroom training as required to complete their apprenticeship.
  1. Must obtain a qualifying score of “5” or higher, using the electrical trade’s aptitude test, which is developed and validated by the American Institutes for Research.
  2. Must be at least a high school graduate, or have a general equivalency diploma (GED), or have a two-year associate or higher degree.
  3. Must show evidence of successful completion of: one full credit of high school algebra with a passing grade, or one post-high school algebra course (e.g. adult education, continuing education, community college, etc.) with a passing grade.
  4. Must provide official transcript(s) for high school and post-high school education and training. All GED records must be submitted, if applicable.
  5. Must have a valid driver’s license.
  6. Must submit a DD-214 to verify military training and/or experience, if they are a veteran and wish to receive consideration for such training/experience.
  7. Must pass a drug-screen test prior to indenture. Cost of the test to be borne by the selected applicant.
  8. Must live within the local’s geographic jurisdiction (proof required) :

Erie County – all townships

Cattaraugus County - townships of Ashford, East Otto, Ellicottville, Farmersville,                                Franklinville, Freedom, Lyndon, Machias, Mansfield, New Albion, Otto, Perrysburg, Persia, Yorkshire.

Genesee County - townships of Alabama, Alexander, Batavia*, Darien, Elba*, Oakfield and Pembroke
* that portion west of Little Tonawanda Creek; Tonawanda Creek; the city limits of Batavia (in effect prior to Feb. 1, 1970); and State Highway No. 98 north of the City of Batavia.

Wyoming County - townships of Arcade, Attica, Bennington, Eagle, Java, Orangeville, Sheldon and Weathersfield.

Apprentice programs registered with the Department of Labor must meet standards established by the Commissioner. Under state law, sponsors of programs cannot discriminate against applicants because of race, creed, color, national origin, age, sex, disability or marital status. Women and minorities are encouraged to submit applications for apprenticeship programs. Sponsors of programs are required to adopt affirmative action plans for the recruitment of women and minorities.
