Carpenters Recruit Apprentices

Cheektowaga, NY (April 7, 2014) -- The Empire State Regional Carpenters Joint  Apprenticeship and Training Committee, Local Union #289 (Zone 2), will conduct a recruitment from May 6, 2014 through April 7, 2015 for 10 carpenter apprentices, State Labor Commissioner Peter M. Rivera announced today.

Please note that the 10 openings listed for apprentices represent the total number for two recruitment regions – the Western and Finger Lakes regions.  This program has jurisdiction in the counties of Erie, Niagara, Orleans, Genesee, and Wyoming. 

Applications must be obtained and submitted in person at the Construction Industry Employers Association, 2660 William Street, Cheektowaga, NY, from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m., on the first Tuesday of each month, excluding legal holidays, during the recruitment period.  No applications will be accepted by mail.  

The rank list resulting from this recruitment will be used to fill commercial, heavy highway, and residential carpentry positions.

The Committee requires that applicants:

  • Must be at least 18 years old. A signed statement must be submitted at the time of application. Proof will be required at the time of employment.
  • Must have a high school diploma or a high school equivalency diploma (such as TASC or GED) as recognized by the New York State Department of Education.  A signed statement must be submitted at the time of application. Proof will be required at the time of employment.
  • Must sign a statement, at the time of application, that they are physically able to do the work of a carpenter. This may include heavy work and working at heights.
  • Must be a resident of the geographic jurisdiction of Local Union #289 for at least six months prior to application. The program’s jurisdiction includes the counties of Erie, Niagara, Orleans, Genesee, and Wyoming. 
  • Must take the UBC Qualifying Math Test, administered by the sponsor.
  • Must have a valid NYS driver’s license in order to drive company vehicles.
  • Must have reliable transportation to and from work and related instruction. A signed statement must be submitted at the time of application.
  • Must be willing to attend school in Rochester, NY. 
  • Must submit to a drug test, at the expense of the sponsor, at the time of employment.
  • Must provide military transfer card or discharge form DD-214, if applicable, after selection and prior to indenture.
  • Must participate in an interview, if selected.

Apprentice programs registered with the Department of Labor must meet standards established by the Commissioner. Under state law, sponsors of programs cannot discriminate against applicants because of race, creed, color, national origin, age, sex, disability, or marital status. Women and minorities are encouraged to submit applications for apprenticeship programs. Sponsors of programs are required to adopt affirmative action plans for the recruitment of women and minorities.
