Metro-North Completes Replacement of Prospect Hill Road in Southeast, New York, on Budget and Ahead of ScheduleRenewed Bridge Now Open to Vehicular and Pedestrian Traffic

MTA Metro-North Railroad today announced that it completed the replacement of the Prospect Hill Road Bridge in Southeast, New York, more than two months ahead of schedule and within budget. The bridge has now re-opened to vehicular and pedestrian traffic.
The 270-foot-long bridge, which was originally built in 1910, is located just south of the Southeast station; it carries Prospect Hill Road over the Harlem Line tracks and parts of Metro-North’s Brewster Yard.
In April 2017, the MTA Board approved a $9.45 million contract to the design-build team of Halmar International and WSP for the final design and construction of the replacement bridge.
As part of the design-built process, Halmar-WSP provided a final design for a multi stringer steel superstructure, which made it easier and more efficient to install girders over the active Harlem Line and Brewster Yard tracks.
The first element of the bridge replacement involved the demolition and removal of the bridge truss superstructure, piers, top of the abutments and roadway approaches, as well as clearing trees, stumps and rubbish from the project area. Utility poles were removed and relocated to accommodate the structural work and the new bridge footprint; crews relocated utilities, including telephone, cable, electrical, communications, signals, and power. The contractor then built new integral abutments, a center pier, roadway approaches, sidewalk, striping, signage, guide rails, fencing, retaining walls, embankments and drainage structures.
Metro-North President Catherine Rinaldi said: “The Prospect Hill Bridge has been a key component of the town’s infrastructure for over a century, and we’re pleased that a new Prospect Hill Bridge is now a reality for Putnam residents. Its reopening will increase resident and commercial mobility in the town of Southeast, and we’re delighted to have partnered with the local community on the project.”
U.S. Representative Sean Patrick Maloney said: “I hear from people worried about aging bridges in the Hudson Valley all the time – getting them fixed makes our communities safer and protects corridors of economic activity like we have in Southeast. I want to thank Metro-North for being proactive on getting this fixed – and doing so ahead of schedule and under budget.” Senator Terrence Murphy said: "The safety of our roads and infrastructure is directly tied to the economic growth and quality of life of our communities. The MTA and the local community are to be commended for working together to solve the difficult issue of financing the project. The new bridge will be a valuable asset for the residents of Southeast and Putnam County for many years to come.”
State Senator Elect Pete Harckham said: “The completion of this bridge is an important component of the Metro North capital plan to improve regional infrastructure. It underscores the need for us to find Metro North a sustainable funding stream to continue with additional transportation upgrades.”
Assemblyman Kevin Byrne said: “The completion of the Prospect Hill Road Bridge is wonderful news for the residents of Southeast and Putnam County. It's critical we invest in infrastructure for the safety and benefit of all New Yorkers.”
MaryEllen Odell, Putnam County Executive said: "I am excited to have the Prospect Hill Bridge repaired and reopened to vehicular traffic in Brewster. The safety and well-being of Putnam County residents is my administration's top priority and I am pleased that we can have partners such as the Metro North Railroad that share our values. I appreciate Metro North's commitment to investing in its infrastructure in Putnam County."
Brewster Mayor James Schoenig said: “As the village of Brewster continues to pursue economic revitalization for our downtown transit-oriented urban area, vital infrastructure improvements like the Prospect Hill Bridge serve as key arteries for our transportation hub. Additionally, enabling unfettered access between our Village and Town via that route will relieve the traffic detours, strengthen emergency response, reduce carbon emissions and save residents and taxpayers time and money. We thank Metro North and the Town of Southeast for addressing this issue and achieving the goal of reopening Prospect Hill Road to all traffic.”
Tony Hay, Southeast Supervisor said: "Santa has come early to the Town of Southeast. A wish of many of our residents has come true with the reopening of the Prospect Hill Bridge. The once rickety bridge is now a solid structure reopening a vital link between two sides of our town. We've heard nothing but positive comments about its reopening.”
MTA Board member Neal Zuckerman said: "The reopening of the Prospect Road Bridge is welcome news to Southeast and Putnam County residents. This state-of-the art bridge restores a valuable piece of infrastructure, and it will only serve to enhance the community’s quality of life. As the largest Metro-North station in our county, it is critical to support Southeast's riders.”
