DEC TO EXPAND PARKING LOT AT TINKER FALLS IN LABRADOR HOLLOW UNIQUE AREAExpansion Work to Improve Safety Expected to Last Several Weeks |
|
The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) today announced plans to expand the main parking area at Tinker Falls located on Route 91 in the Town of Truxton, Cortland County. The work will increase parking lot capacity to approximately 45 cars – up from the 20 that can park there now. “Tinker Falls is a beautiful, easily accessible hiking spot that has grown significantly in popularity,” DEC’s Region 7 Regional Forester Chris Sprague said. “Oftentimes on busy days, the main lot at Tinker Falls will fill and cars park on the shoulder of Route 91, creating a potentially dangerous situation. This expansion will improve access and safety for everyone enjoying the waterfall and hiking trails.” DEC’s work is underway and expected to last up to three weeks. During that time, the lot will be closed but visitors can use the auxiliary lot located approximately 100 yards south of the main lot on Route 91 or the Labrador Hollow Unique Area main lot on Labrador Crossroad. Tinker Falls is a short hike on the Skyline Trail from the Labrador lot. Tinker Falls is located in the Labrador Hollow Unique Area east of the Town of Tully off of State Route 91. Accessible features in the area include a wheelchair-accessible fishing/viewing platform 230 feet from the parking area on Markham Hollow Road; a wheelchair-accessible hiking trail with 0.4-mile gentle grade and wide-tread boardwalk loop, as well as a seasonal portable toilet at the main parking area on Labrador Crossroad; and a wheelchair-accessible hiking trail from the Tinker Falls parking area of Route 91. The accessible parking area will not be closed during the ongoing construction.
