Work Between 42 St-Bryant Park and 59 St-Columbus Circle is Required to Maintain Tracks Until Scheduled Replacement in 2021 

For Two Weekends in November South of West 4 St,  Trains Will Stop at  Stations and  Trains Will Stop at  Stations 

The Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) today announced track maintenance on the 6 Av  express lines between 59 St-Columbus Circle and 42 St-Bryant Park to ensure reliability until the tracks can be replaced in 2021. For two weekends in November south of West 4 St,  trains will stop at  stations and  trains will stop at  stations. 

Track replacement on the lines, which was originally scheduled for Spring 2020, was postponed to next year due to the COVID-19 pandemic. In the meantime, crews will repair and replace new track components including plates, rails and blocks between 59 St-Columbus Circle and 7 Av-53 St. Track renewal work is also being performed between the 42 St-Bryant Park and 47-50 Sts-Rockefeller Center stations. 

The repairs are being done during a period of low subway ridership, and during the ongoing overnight subway shutdown between 1 a.m. and 5 a.m., minimizing the disruption of the work and impacting as few riders as possible. 

"Performing regular track maintenance is critical to having a modern, more reliable, safe system for decades to come,” said NYC Transit Interim President Sarah Feinberg. “I want to thank our riders for their patience while we work to improve the system and hope that they find our new Live Subway Map helpful as they navigate these changes.” 

On Oct. 19, New York City Transit launched a public beta of a new “Live Subway Map,” a web-based map available at https://map.mta.info that’s updated in real-time to reflect service changes including reroutes and line swaps such as those caused by this trackwork. 

During the weekends of Nov. 13-16 and Nov. 20-23, from 9:30 p.m. Friday to 5 a.m. Monday, the following service changes will be in effect: 

•  trains will run via the  line between 135 St and W 4 St and via the  between W 4 St and Church Av in both directions; the  will not go to Coney Island 
•  trains will run via the  between W 4 St and Coney Island  
• Northbound  trains will run express between Canal St and 145 St  
• On the weekend of Nov. 13-16, southbound  trains will run via the  line between 5 Av-53 St and W 4 St  
• On the weekend of Nov. 20-23, the  will run via the  line in both directions between Roosevelt Av and West 4 St 

As a reminder, there is no weekend service at  stations between Church Av and Coney Island-Stillwell Av due to work to install modern computer-based signaling on the line, which is why the  will not serve Coney Island on the weekends it is running on the  line. Customers traveling on the  line between Church Av and Coney Island-Stillwell Av should continue to use  stations and local buses to complete their trips during the weekend outages. 

Coordination with local elected officials, community boards and stakeholders will continue throughout the work. 

The MTA will post print and digital signs in stations, along with announcements in stations and on trains, before the work begins.
