The Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) today announced crews completed much-needed aesthetic and functional renovations of the Avenue I f station in Midwood, Brooklyn. This work is part of New York City Transit (NYCT)’s Re-NEW-Vation Program, which utilizes planned weekend service outages to perform upgrades, repairs, and enhanced cleaning in stations within a 55-hour window, providing customers with overhauled stations when service interruptions end on Mondays.

In surveys, subway customers consistently cite station cleanliness as a core driver of overall satisfaction. Station re-NEW-vations are performed at stations with lower cleanliness satisfaction, in direct response to customer feedback. The Station Re-NEW-Vation Program is one of the major initiatives in New York City Transit’s Faster, Cleaner and Safer plan to improve the subway customer experience.

“By taking advantage of planned service changes, we were able to respond directly to customer concerns and provide a cleaner, more inviting subway station,” said NYC Transit President Richard Davey. “Through deep cleaning, brighter lightening, and a fresh coat of paint, Avenue I customers are already experiencing better commutes than they did only a few days ago.”

"Improving NYC transit is a major quality of life issue for hard-working New Yorkers, senior citizens, and students,” said Senator Simcha Felder. “I applaud this initiative to make NYC transit faster, cleaner and safer throughout our city and I look forward to seeing positive results from the upcoming re-NEW-vation at the Ave I f station in my district."

Over the last weekend while planned track maintenance took place, Avenue I received a fresh coat of paint after transit workers scraped peeling paint and primed surfaces. Crews completed gutter repairs on the platform, mezzanine and street level to help remediate leaks during rain. As customers enter the refurbished station, they will notice new LED lighting brightening stairwells, fare areas, wall tiles and stairway globes. In addition to customer-facing improvements, employee facilities also received a deep cleaning treatment, new lighting, painting and flooring to create a more welcoming environment.

Avenue I is the 43rd station to be enhanced with an upcoming refurbishment planned at Sutter Av on the l line in Brownsville, Brooklyn. In total, NYCT plans to complete 50 “re-new-vations" by the end of the year.
