Bricklayers and Allied Craft Workers Recruit Apprentices

Long Island City, NY (March 11, 2015) -- The Bricklayers & Allied Craft Workers Local Union #1 of NY & LI will conduct a recruitment from March 27, 2015 through February 26, 2016 for three stonemason apprentices; three pointer, caulker & cleaner apprentices; three plasterer apprentices; and ten bricklayer-mason apprentices, the New York State Department of Labor announced today.

Applications will be available at the International Masonry Institute, 12-07 44th avenue, Long Island City, NY, 11101 from 8:00 a.m. to 8:30 a.m. on the following dates: 03/27/15, 04/24/15, 05/29/14, 06/26/15, 09/25/15, 10/30/15, 11/20/15, 12/18/15, 01/29/16 and 02/26/16. Doors open at 8:00 a.m. There will be no admittance after 8:30 a.m. Testing will be held until 10:00 a.m.  Mailed in applications will not be accepted.

  

The Committee requires that applicants:

 

·         Must be at least 18 years old.  Proof is required at time of indenture (birth certificate, state issued drivers license, or any state or federal identification showing date of birth)

·         Must have a high school diploma or general equivalency diploma (such as TASC or GED).  Proof is required at time of indenture.

·         Must submit a copy of DD214 at time of indenture (if applicable).

·         Must take Basic Assessment Skills Exam (given during application process).

·         Must be willing to commute within the Jurisdiction of Local Union #1, which includes all   5 boroughs of New York, Nassau, and Suffolk Counties.

·         Must have reliable transportation to locations where no reasonable access to public transportation exists.

·         May be asked to take a drug test, at the sponsor’s expense, at time of indenture.

·         Must be physically capable of performing the essential functions of the apprenticeship program without posing a direct threat to the health or safety of themselves or others.

·         Must sign an “Affidavit for Physical Performance” which includes the following:

o   Working with hand tools and power tools.

o   Exposure to loud noise, hazardous machinery, hazardous voltages, and respiratory irritants.

o   May also include prolonged standing, climbing, walking, squatting, stretching, bending, and working while on knees.

o   May be required to work under extreme temperatures ranging from 0 degrees  (outside work in the winter) to extreme heat in the summer. 

o   Every day work may be at such temperatures, and in confined areas, where movement is greatly limited.

o   Lifting and moving heavy supplies and equipment up to 100 pounds.

o   Working from ladders, scaffolds and personnel lifts, which may exceed 100 feet.

            Apprentice programs registered with the Department of Labor must meet standards established by the Commissioner.  Under state law, sponsors of programs cannot discriminate against applicants because of race, creed, color, national origin, age, sex, disability or marital status.  Women and minorities are encouraged to submit applications for apprenticeship programs.  Sponsors of programs are required to adopt affirmative action plans for the recruitment of women and minorities.
