New York State Division of Human Rights Commemorates Black History Month

Hosts Event Examining Discrimination & Education

Launches Employment Discrimination Public Awareness Campaign

The New York State Division of Human Rights (DHR), as part of its Black History Month commemoration, will host a live webinar on racial discrimination in education and new protections under the state anti-discrimination law on February 23, at 5:30 PM.  The Division will also launch a public awareness advertisement campaign on employment discrimination, produced in partnership with the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission.

“For centuries, Black Americans have been leading the fight to achieve racial equality for all,” said Division of Human Rights Commissioner Maria L. Imperial.  “Here at the Division of Human Rights we continue that fight every day by enforcing the Human Rights Law and educating the community about their rights under the law.”

The webinar will be held on Zoom and feature speakers from the Alliance for Quality Education and 4th Family, community organizations that work in educational equity, as well as experts from the Division.  Registration is open here.  DHR has also been commemorating Black History Month with a month-long social media campaign.  You can follow the Division’s campaign on FacebookInstagramTwitter, or LinkedIn.

DHR works in partnership with the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission on the investigation and prevention of workplace discrimination.  To further educate the public on their rights and responsibilities under both federal and state law, the agencies are launching a joint public awareness advertisement campaign.

New York has the proud distinction of being the first state in the nation to enact a Human Rights Law, affording every citizen “an equal opportunity to enjoy a full and productive life.” The New York State Division of Human Rights is the agency in charge of enforcing this law, which prohibits discrimination in employment, housing, public accommodations, credit, and educational institutions. For more information about the Human Rights Law and the work of the agency, please visit the DHR website at https://dhr.ny.gov.
