Plumbers & Pipefitters Recruit Apprentices

Oriskany, NY (February 7, 2018) - The Joint Apprenticeship and Training Committee for Plumbers & Pipefitters, Local Union #112 (Northern Zone), will conduct a recruitment from March 7, 2018 through February 6, 2019 for four plumber and steamfitter apprentices, the New York State Department of Labor announced today.

Please note that the four openings listed for apprentices represent the total number for three recruitment regions – the Central, Mohawk Valley, and North Country regions. This division of Local Union #112 has jurisdiction in the counties of Herkimer, Lewis, Madison, and Oneida.

Applications can be obtained at the Local Union #112 office, 110 Dry Road, Oriskany, NY, from 8:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. on the first working Wednesday of each month, excluding legal holidays, during the recruitment period. Applicants can find more information on the Union’s website: http://www.ualocal112.org. Applications must be received no later than February 13, 2019.

The Committee requires that applicants:

  • Must sign an affidavit attesting that they are at least 18 years old. Proof of age may be required, after selection and prior to indenture.
  • Must have a high school diploma or a high school equivalency diploma (such as TASC or GED).  Must sign an affidavit attesting to the same. Proof of diploma may be required.
  • Must be physically able to perform the work required as determined by a physical exam, including drug testing, at the expense of the sponsor, after selection and prior to indenture.
  • Must sign an affidavit attesting that they are physically able to do the work of a plumber and steamfitter, which may include:
    • Performing all phases of the plumbing industry.
    • Regularly working at varying heights up to 150 feet.
    • Working with sharp objects, hazardous machinery, and possible exposure to loud noises and respiratory irritants. 
    • Prolonged standing and walking.
    • Repeated squatting and/or bending.
    • Working in extreme temperatures and severe weather conditions.
    • Working in confined spaces.
    • Lifting and/or moving heavy objects and equipment (the minimum lifting requirement is 77 pounds).
    • Working from ladders and scaffolds.
    • Working in wet and muddy conditions.
  • Must have reliable transportation to and from various job sites and related instruction classes.
  • Must sign a scholarship loan agreement in conjunction with training classes.
  • Must provide DD-214, Certificate of Release or Discharge from Active Duty, if applicable, after selection and prior to indenture.

Apprentice programs registered with the Department of Labor must meet standards established by the Commissioner. Under state law, sponsors of programs cannot discriminate against applicants because of race, creed, color, national origin, age, sex, disability, or marital status. Women and minorities are encouraged to submit applications for apprenticeship programs. Sponsors of programs are required to adopt affirmative action plans for the recruitment of women and minorities.
