Roofers Recruit Apprentices

Rochester, NY (October 15, 2013) – The Roofers Joint Apprenticeship and Training Committee, Local Union #22, will conduct a recruitment from October 21, 2013 through October 20, 2014 for 40 roofer apprentices, State Labor Commissioner Peter M. Rivera announced today.

Applications must be obtained and submitted at the Local Union #22 office, 280 Metro Park, Rochester, NY from 9:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. every Monday, excluding legal holidays, during the recruitment period.  All applications must be completed on site during the time indicated.    

The Committee requires that applicants:

  • Must be at least 18 years old.
  • Must have at least a tenth grade education with one year of basic math (with a passing grade).  A transcript or General Equivalency Diploma (G.E.D.) will be required.
  • Must attest to being capable of performing the physical requirements of the trade.
  • Must have resided within the jurisdiction of Local Union #22 for one year or more.  This includes the counties of Monroe, Livingston, Ontario, Wayne, and Yates. 
  • Must have reliable transportation to and from different job sites and related instruction.
  • Must be a U.S. citizen or be legally able to work in this country.

Work in the roofing and waterproofing industry can be strenuous.  It can involve climbing ladders, scaffolds and roofs, working at great heights, and lifting materials in excess of 70 pounds.  Roofing work is usually performed in open air in all types of weather.  Drug testing may be required on some job sites.

Apprentice programs registered with the Department of Labor must meet standards established by the Commissioner.  Under state law, sponsors of programs cannot discriminate against applicants because of race, creed, color, national origin, age, sex, disability, or marital status.  Women and minorities are encouraged to submit applications for apprenticeship programs.  Sponsors of programs are required to adopt affirmative action plans for the recruitment of women and minorities.
