Elevator Constructors Recruit Apprentices

Syracuse, NY (May 22, 2014) - The Joint Apprenticeship and Training Committee for The International Union of Elevator Constructors, Local Union #62, will conduct a recruitment from June 23, 2014 through July 07, 2014 for one elevator-escalator constructor and modernizer apprentice, State Labor Commissioner Peter M. Rivera announced today.

Application requests must be made in writing to NEIEP Region 12, 4 Kitchener Road, Sterling, MA 01564-2225, during the recruitment period.  Application requests must be received by July 7, 2014.  Completed applications must be received by July 25, 2014.   

Applicants must take and pass the Elevator Industry Aptitude Test.  A testing fee of $25 must be paid at the time of testing.  The payment must be in the form of a postal money order or bank check (no cash or personal checks will be accepted).  Please note, you may request that this fee be waived.  Fee waivers will be approved upon showing verifiable proof of financial need.

The Committee requires that applicants:

  • Must be at least 18 years old.
  • Must have a high school diploma or a high school equivalency diploma (such as TASC or GED).  Proof must be submitted with completed application.
  • Must pass a drug test, at the expense of the sponsor, after selection and prior to indenture. 
  • Must sign a statement indicating that he/she is physically able to perform the work of an elevator-escalator constructor and modernizer, which includes lifting, climbing, and working from heights.
  • Must reside in the jurisdiction of Local Union #62 at the time of application.  This includes the following:
    • The counties of Broome, Cayuga, Chenango, Cortland, Jefferson, Lewis, Oswego, St. Lawrence, Tioga, and Tompkins. 
    • In Madison County - the towns of Cazenovia, Chittenango, Deruyter, Eaton, Fenner, Georgetown, Lebanon, Lenox, Nelson, and Sullivan. 
    • In Oneida County - the towns of Camden, Florence, and Vienna. 
    • In Delaware County - the towns of Deposit, Franklin, Masonville, Sidney, Tompkins, and Walton.
  • Must have reliable transportation to and from job sites and related instruction.
  • Must pass a drug test, at the expense of the sponsor, after selection and prior to indenture.

Apprentice programs registered with the Department of Labor must meet standards established by the Commissioner.  Under state law, sponsors of programs cannot discriminate against applicants because of race, creed, color, national origin, age, sex, disability, or marital status.  Women and minorities are encouraged to submit applications for apprenticeship programs.  Sponsors of programs are required to adopt affirmative action plans for the recruitment of women and minorities.
