MTA Metro-North Railroad today announced plans to hold information sessions on June 19 and 20 for the public to learn more about the design and construction of the Empire State Trail – Maybrook Trailway Section, a 23-mile shared-use bicycle and pedestrian path occupying the Metro-North Railroad Beacon Line corridor. Construction of the trail is scheduled to begin later this month.

 

The Maybrook Trailway Section will run from the Putnam and Maybrook Trailways in Brewster, all the way to Hopewell Junction, where it will connect with the Dutchess Rail Trail. It’s an important part of the Empire State Trail, providing a key link between the Putnam Trailway and the Dutchess Rail Trail and Walkway Over the Hudson State Park.  

 

Governor Andrew M. Cuomo is creating the Empire State Trail as part of the promise to invest and build infrastructure to support New York’s economy. Once completed in 2020, the Empire State Trail will be the largest bike and walking pathway in the nation, spanning 750-miles from New York City to Canada and from Albany to Buffalo.

 

The Maybrook Trailway crosses through two counties (Putnam and Dutchess), five towns, and one village. Along the route, it goes through rural landscapes and wooded areas featuring seasonal waterfalls as well as crosses the Appalachian Trail along the way. There is Metro-North station access nearby at Poughkeepsie and in Brewster, providing multi-modal access to transit long the trail.
