Bohemia, NY (November 4, 2013) - The United Service Workers, Local Union #355 JATF, will conduct a recruitment from November 12, 2013 through November 25, 2013 for three sheet metal worker apprentices, State Labor Commissioner Peter M. Rivera announced today. 

Applications will be available at the office of Local Union #355, 267 Knickerbocker Avenue, Bohemia, NY from 3:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m., Monday through Friday, excluding legal holidays, during the recruitment period.  All applications must be completed on site.

The Committee requires that applicants:

• Must be at least 18 years old.
• Must have a high school diploma or General Equivalency Diploma (G.E.D.) with at least one year of high school algebra.
• Must be physically able to perform the work required of an ironworker, and must sign an affidavit attesting to the same.  A sheet metal worker:
  • Must be able to work an eight-hour day continually on one’s feet.
  • Must be able to lift and carry weights in excess of 75 pounds for extended periods.
  • Must be able to work through extended periods of extreme weather conditions and temperatures.
  • Must be able to work in restrictive or confined spaces.
  • Must be able to work at heights of 20 feet or more on ladders, scaffolds, scissor lifts, or boom lifts.
  • Must be able to work in ditches or trenches up to 6 feet in depth.
  • Must be able to read, hear, and understand instructions and warnings.
• Must pass a drug test, after an offer of employment, at the expense of the sponsor.
• Must have reliable transportation to and from various job sites and related instruction in and around Nassau and Suffolk counties.
• Must provide military transfer card or discharge form DD214, if applicable, upon offer or selection.

Apprentice programs registered with the Department of Labor must meet standards established by the Commissioner.  Under state law, sponsors of programs cannot discriminate against applicants because of race, creed, color, national origin, age, sex, disability, or marital status.  Women and minorities are encouraged to submit applications for apprenticeship programs.  Sponsors of programs are required to adopt affirmative action plans for the recruitment of women and minorities.
