MEDIA ADVISORY: OFFICE OF FIRE PREVENTION AND CONTROL FIRE PROTECTION SPECIALISTS OFFER SPARKLING DEVICE SAFETY TIPS AND DEMONSTRATE DANGERS OF SPARKLING DEVICE MISUSE

WHEN: Tuesday, June 25th, 2019, at 10:30 a.m. (in the event of rain, a new date and time will be forthcoming)

WHO: State Fire Protection Specialists from the Division of Homeland Security and Emergency Services’ Office of Fire Prevention and Control

WHAT:  The federal Consumer Product Safety Commission estimates about 12,900 people were treated in hospital emergency rooms for injuries associated with fireworks in 2017. Some 67 percent of these estimated injuries occurred during a one-month period around the Fourth of July. Given these statistics, it is critical that New Yorkers understand the risks of these devices and how to handle them safely if they are used. As such, Fire Protection Specialists from the New York State Office of Fire Prevention and Control will discuss the safe behaviors that should be practiced while using sparkling devices, as well as conduct a series of demonstrations showing the dangers of sparkling device misuse.

WHERE: New York State Office of Fire Prevention Special Operations Center, Northeaster Industrial Park, 2 Van Buren Blvd., Building 10, Bay 5, Guilderland Center, NY 12085.

RSVP: News media wishing to attend should RSVP to Colin Brennan prior to June 25th.  Please RSVP to colin.brennan@dhses.ny.gov or 518-474-2214.
