Hugh L Carey Tunnel Full Weekend Tube Closures for Sandy RestorationOne Lane Open in Each Direction in Remaining Tube
|
|
One tube at the Hugh L Carey Tunnel will be closed regularly, from 8:00 p.m. Fridays through 5:30 a.m. Mondays, to accommodate ongoing work related to the $282.5 million Superstorm Sandy restoration project. The accelerated schedule is intended to shorten the overall duration of the work and reduce impact on customers and the neighboring communities. One lane will operate in each direction in the remaining tube during these weekend periods, as well as during the regular weeknight (Mondays through Thursdays, 8:00 p.m. through 5:30 a.m.) night tube closures for the same Sandy work. The repair project includes replacing multiple systems that were damaged during Superstorm Sandy in 2012, such as the traffic control and communications, lighting, drainage pump and fire line systems. Contractors also are repairing damaged concrete, installing new LED lights and emergency way-finding safety lights; replacing tunnel wall tiles, ceiling finishes, catwalks and duct banks; rehabilitating curbs and gutters and repaving tunnel roadways. Motorists may experience delays and may wish to consider an alternate route and plan accordingly. Motorists can sign up for MTA e-mail or text alerts at www.mta.info for the latest information on this planned work. |
