FASTRACK Returns to the L Line in Brooklyn

Free Shuttle Buses Provide Alternate Service

An extensive list of maintenance, cleaning and repair assignments will be performed along a significant portion of the l Line beginning Monday, April 3, when MTA New York City Transit’s FASTRACK program begins the first week of a two-week effort.  FASTRACK work will be performed for four consecutive weeknights, from 10:00 p.m. to 5:00 a.m. on April 3-7 and April 10-14.  During those periods, l service will be suspended in both directions between Lorimer St and Broadway Junction.

l service will operate in two sections:  between Canarsie-Rockaway Pkwy and Broadway Junction, and between 8 Av and Lorimer St.  Free shuttle buses will provide alternate service.

Travel alternatives:

  • Free shuttle buses make all l line station stops between Lorimer St and Broadway Junction.
  • At Lorimer St, transfer between gl trains and free shuttle buses, located on Metropolitan Av at Union Av.
  • At Myrtle-Wyckoff Avs, transfer between m trains and free shuttle buses, located on Gates Av and Wyckoff Av.
  • Consider using the a or j to/from Manhattan, via a free transfer at Broadway Junction.
  • Transfer between ajl trains and free shuttle buses at Broadway Junction, located on Fulton St at Van Sinderen Av.

FASTRACK has been designed around the careful determination that there is adequate alternate means of transportation, including enhanced services along some bus lines during work periods.  Alternative transportation options will be detailed in announcements and posters on trains, in stations and on selected buses; brochures will be available in both English and Spanish.  More information on this FASTRACK can be found on the web at http://web.mta.info/nyct/service/fastrack_Canarsie_L_Line.htm

Wynton Habersham, Senior Vice President for the Department of Subways said "FASTRACK has consolidated maintenance forces in a concentrated area for proactive maintenance that helps improve service delivery.”

During our previous FASTRACK on the l in August 2016, NYC Transit workers took advantage of this train-free access each night to perform a range of cleaning and maintenance tasks of station and tunnel infrastructure, signal equipment, and track and third rail components.  Over a three week period, track workers replaced 109 rails, 4,682 friction pads, 520 tie blocks and 5,413 track plates.  They also removed 256,000 pounds of debris from the tracks and scraped and cleaned 4,210 feet of track under the third rail.  Infrastructure crews grouted 715 leaks, repaired 2,400 feet of handrails, repaired 351 feet of bench wall, cleaned 400 feet of drain lines, serviced 12 pump plants, removed 1,350 gallons of silt and replaced 535 light bulbs.

At stations, work crews painted 134,505 square feet of station surfaces including, 135 stairway safety features, 194 columns, 26 doors, and 10,734 feet of rubbing board at the platform’s edge.  They also replaced 958 light bulbs and 34 ballasts, repaired 1,012 feet of rubbing board and installed 175 feet of drain lines.  Signal crews completed 26 annual signal component inspections, replaced 124 signal components, serviced 28 signals, 10 switches and 17 cut sections, and performed testing on 64 signals and 4 switches.  In the area of electronic maintenance, 78 CCTV cameras and 75 CCTV monitors were serviced.  This only represents a portion of the work that is completed during FASTRACK.

FASTRACK was introduced in January 2012, devoting four straight weeknights to perform maintenance work in tunnels, stations and on tracks, completely suspending service within a given line segment for a seven-hour period between 10:00 p.m. and 5:00 a.m.  This gives free access to the system, allowing an army of maintenance workers to perform dozens of tasks repairing and replacing components that are vital to providing safe and reliable train service without the concern of having to "clear up" to allow trains to pass.  FASTRACK efforts have been highly successful in providing a safer work environment for employees and improved station conditions for customers.

Our next FASTRACK overnight closure will be on the j Line in Lower Manhattan for two consecutive weeks from May 1 to May 5 and May 8 to 12.
