Elevator Constructors Recruit Apprentices

Albany, NY (October 12, 2017) - The Joint Apprenticeship and Training Committee for the International Union of Elevator Constructors, Local Union #35, will conduct a recruitment from November 12, 2017 through December 12, 2017 for one elevator-escalator constructor and modernizer apprentice, the New York State Department of Labor announced today.

Please note that the openings listed for apprentices represent the total number for four recruitment regions – the Capital District, Central, Mohawk Valley, and North Country regions.

Applications will only be accepted online, anytime during the recruitment period, at www.neiep.org/careers.aspx. Applicants who do not have access to a computer may visit their local library or NYS Department of Labor Career Center.

Applicants must take and pass the Elevator Industry Aptitude Test with a score of at least 70. A $25.00 testing fee is required on the testing day. The payment must be in the form of a money order or bank certified check (no cash or personal checks will be accepted). Please note, you may request that this fee be waived. Fee waivers will be approved upon showing verifiable proof of financial need. Applicants must provide valid photo identification on the day of the test.

The Committee requires that applicants:

  • Must be at least 18 years old.
  • Must have a high school diploma or a high school equivalency diploma (such as TASC or GED). Proof will be required after selection and prior to indenture. Failure to provide proof of education will result in immediate removal from the hiring list.
  • Must pass a post-offer physical, administered by a physician, at the expense of the signatory contractor.
  • Must pass a drug test, at the expense of the signatory contractor, after selection and prior to indenture.
  • Must attest to be physically able to perform the work required of the trade, which may include, lifting, climbing, and working from heights, without posing a threat to the health of themselves or others.
  • Must reside within the jurisdiction of Local Union #35, which includes the following counties: Albany, Clinton, Columbia (towns of Claverack, Hillsdale, Ghent, Stockport, Austerlitz, Canaan, New Lebanon, Chatham, Kinderhook, Stuyvesant, Greenport), Essex, Franklin, Fulton, Greene (towns of Durham, Greenville, New Baltimore, Coxsackie, Cairo, Athens, and Catskill within a 30 mile radius of Albany), Hamilton, Herkimer, Madison (excluding the towns of Lenox, Sullivan, Chittenango, Fenner, Cazenovia, Nelson, Eaton, De Ruyter, Georgetown, Lebanon), Montgomery, Oneida (excluding Camden, Florence, Vienna), Otsego, Rensselaer, Saratoga, Schenectady, Schoharie, Warren, and Washington. 
  • Must have reliable transportation to and from various job sites and related instruction classes.

Apprentice programs registered with the Department of Labor must meet standards established by the Commissioner. Under state law, sponsors of programs cannot discriminate against applicants because of race, creed, color, national origin, age, sex, disability, or marital status. Women and minorities are encouraged to submit applications for apprenticeship programs. Sponsors of programs are required to adopt affirmative action plans for the recruitment of women and minorities.
