MTA Restores Service on ACD lines Following Water Main Break at 103rd Street and Central Park West

The Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) released the following statement from Sally Librera, MTA New York City Transit Senior Vice President of Subways, on this morning’s water main break at 103rd Street and Central Park West in Manhattan:

“As of 12:13 p.m., New York City Transit crews have restored service on the acd lines from 59 St-Columbus Circle to 125 St following a rupture of a city-owned water main at 103rd Street and Central Park West. The rupture occurred at 7:50 a.m. and the water had risen above the third rail, creating hazardous operating conditions and requiring removal of power from all tracks, by 9 a.m. when the city Department of Environmental Protection shut off the water main. NYC Transit crews worked swiftly to remove remaining water and assess any impact to signals and other infrastructure critical to the safe operation of trains, including four stop machines, a substation at 99th Street and all third-rail cables. NYC Transit began running test trains through the area shortly before noon.

This is the second time this week that a major city water main break flooded our system, requiring a partial service suspension and inconveniencing our customers for too lengthy a period. We hope this latest incident will spur quicker shut-off response times by the city and a review of its aging system in hopes of avoiding similar situations moving forward.

During the partial suspension on the acd lines due to the water main break, customers were directed to service on the nearby Seventh Avenue 123 line. Customers should expect some residual delays on the acd lines as we return to regular service.”
