NYS OFFICE OF GENERAL SERVICES CELEBRATES GROUNDBREAKING FOR A NEW 200,000-SQUARE-FOOT CONSOLIDATED WAREHOUSE IN GREEN ISLAND

Site Now Under Construction by Luizzi Companies

New Leased Facility Will Increase the Sustainability and Efficiency of State’s Warehouse Operations

New York State Office of General Services (OGS) Commissioner Jeanette Moy today announced the start of construction by Luizzi Companies on a new 200,000-square-foot warehouse in Green Island, New York. Once constructed, the new warehouse will consolidate four existing Capital Region warehouses OGS leases to store state-owned inventory into a single leased warehouse and distribution center.

“OGS is proud to celebrate the groundbreaking of this new warehouse, which will give our state agency partners a centralized space to store inventory used to serve New Yorkers,” Commissioner Moy said. “Located in the heart of Green Island, this space will become a hub that many of our state agency partners will use to store and distribute goods across the Capital Region.”

Under construction by Luizzi Companies, the new facility will feature a range of measures to reduce its carbon footprint, including ENERGY STAR-certified mechanicals, LED lighting on occupancy sensors, and a well-insulated building exterior. Upon completion, the 25 Tibbits Avenue site will be easily accessible by staff who rely on public transit to get to work. Its construction will also include bicycle racks and electrical vehicle chargers to encourage the use of other green modes of transportation.

By consolidating the four existing warehouses located in Menands, Guilderland, and two in Albany into one site in Green Island, the amount of equipment needed for daily operations will be reduced, and more staff will be available to respond to agencies’ requests and distribution priorities. These four warehouses currently store a range of items for more than 10 state agencies, from public outreach materials to IT equipment, which will be moved to the Green Island facility once constructed.

This project is part of OGS’s efforts to streamline and consolidate state agency warehouse and storage operations by creating a comprehensive inventory and reviewing and eliminating warehouse space as needed. Since 2012, OGS has helped the state assess options for warehousing, including whether an agency’s existing warehouse locations are efficiently managed. To date, OGS’s evaluation of 29 leased warehouses for 27 agencies resulted in cost savings of $1.7 million and a reduction of 430,000 square feet in excess warehouse space.

Assemblymember John T. McDonald III, RPh said, "It is a pleasure to join this groundbreaking ceremony for a new NYS Office of General Services warehouse in Green Island. Not only will this new warehouse improve efficiencies to streamline operations, but it will also implement various energy efficiency measures. This is a big addition to the community of Green Island and credit to Mayor McNulty and her team for their hard work. Thank you to Governor Hochul and NYS OGS Commissioner Moy and all of the partners in this effort."

Village of Green Island Mayor Ellen McNulty-Ryan said, “We are very excited with this project and the transformation that is being made on a piece of property that has been an eyesore to our community for many years. The developer, Peter Luizzi, and his team have been a pleasure to work with and we are looking forward to the New York State Office of General Services becoming a part of our community."

President and CEO of Luizzi Companies Peter Luizzi Jr. said, “At a very young age, I would work with my father and adopt his qualities and vision in life – ‘do it right with quality and pride.’ At Luizzi Companies we take great pride in our vision of what we construct and services we provide. Our vision for Tibbits Avenue was larger than we had planned but with OGS’ team and the many partners on the project we sketched an idea that transformed the previous use to a Class A facility utilizing some of the of the many advances of energy efficiencies and construction materials today. We build it right and we look forward to the new partnership with OGS.”
