Plumbers & Steamfitters Recruit Apprentices

Oswego, NY (April 09, 2016) – The Joint Apprenticeship and Training Committee for Plumbers and Steamfitters, Local Union #73, will conduct a recruitment from May 09, 2016 through May 20, 2016 for 20 plumber and steamfitter apprentices, the New York State Department of Labor announced today. 

Please note that the openings listed for apprentices represent the total number for two recruitment regions – the Central and North Country regions. This program’s jurisdiction includes the counties of Cayuga, Jefferson, Lewis, Oswego, and St. Lawrence.

Applications can be obtained at Local Union #73, 705 East Seneca Street, Oswego, NY, from 8:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. and from 1:30 p.m. to 3:30 p.m., Monday through Friday, during the recruitment period. Applications must be obtained in person. This is a limited-application recruitment. Only 100 applications will be distributed, on a first-come, first-served basis.  All applications must be submitted by May 20, 2016.

The Committee requires that applicants:

  • Must be at least 18 years old.
  • Must have a high school diploma or a high school equivalency diploma (such as TASC or GED).
  • Must attest in writing that they are physically able to perform the work required, which may include:
    • Moderate to heavy lifting.
    • Working in confined spaces.
    • Working from ladders and scaffolds at various heights.
    • Working in extreme cold and heat.
  • Must possess a valid driver’s license in order to operate company vehicles.
  • Must pass a drug screening, at the expense of the sponsor, after selection and prior to indenture.
  • Must have reliable transportation to and from various job sites and related instruction classes.
  • Must purchase text materials for class at an average cost of $50.00 per year.
  • Must submit military transfer card or discharge form DD-214, if applicable, after selection and prior to indenture.

Apprentice programs registered with the Department of Labor must meet standards established by the Commissioner. Under state law, sponsors of programs cannot discriminate against applicants because of race, creed, color, national origin, age, sex, disability, or marital status. Women and minorities are encouraged to submit applications for apprenticeship programs. Sponsors of programs are required to adopt affirmative action plans for the recruitment of women and minorities.
