Bohemia (June 5, 2015) – The Joint Apprenticeship and Training Committee for Road and Heavy Construction Laborers, Local #1298, will conduct a limited recruitment from July 7, 2015 through July 31, 2015 for 20 skilled construction craft laborers, the New York State Department of Labor announced today.

Applications may be obtained in person at Local Union #1298, 1611 Locust Avenue, Bohemia, NY, Monday through Friday from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. during the recruitment period.  Applications will be available and accepted for 20 business days, or until 200 applications have been issued, whichever comes first.  All applications must be received no later than August 3, 2015.

The Committee requires that applicants:

·         Must be at least 18 years old.

·         Must have a high school diploma or a high school equivalency diploma (such as TASC or GED).

·         Must have reliable transportation to and from work and related instruction.

·         Must sign a statement indicating that they are physically able to perform the work of the trade, which may include:

o Working an 8-hour day continually on their feet.

o Lifting and carrying weights in excess of 95 lbs. for extended periods.

o Working at heights of 20 feet on scaffold or platforms.

o Working in excavations or trenches up to 20 feet in depth.

o Working in restrictive or confined spaces.

·         Must become a union member if accepted into the apprenticeship program.

·         Must provide military transfer or discharge form DD-214, if applicable, after selection and prior to indenture.

·         Must be legally able to work in the United States.

Apprentice programs registered with the Department of Labor must meet standards established by the Commissioner.  Under state law, sponsors of programs cannot discriminate against applicants because of race, creed, color, national origin, age, sex, disability, or marital status.  Women and minorities are encouraged to submit applications for apprenticeship programs.  Sponsors of programs are required to adopt affirmative action plans for the recruitment of women and minorities.
