Lake Placid 2016-’17 Fall/Winter Event Season Schedule

(Oct. 2, 2016) --- Below is a rundown of many of the events on ORDA’s fall/winter 2016-’17 events’ calendar for your planning purposes. Dates and schedules are subject to change.

Nov. 28-Dec. 3, 2016 – FIL Luge World Cup. International luge racing returns to Lake Placid. The doubles and men’s races will be held on Dec. 2, while the women’s and team relay competitions will take place on Dec. 3. (Credential request form attached)

Dec. 12-17, 2016 – IBSF Bobsled and Skeleton World Cup. Racing starts on Dec. 16 with two-man and women’s bobsled and men skeleton. Dec. 17 features women’s skeleton and four-man bobsled. (Credential request form attached)

Dec. 30, 2016 – Stars on Ice Skating Show. North America’s premier skating show returns to Lake Placid’s Olympic Center. The show brings together Olympic, world and national champions for an exciting and unforgettable evening of figure skating.

Jan. 7, 2017 – ECAC Men’s Ice Hockey. Clarkson University faces RPI in a league matchup. This game could also be a preview of the ECAC Championship tournament, to be held in March in Lake Placid. The Golden Knights enter the upcoming season ranked fourth in the conference’s pre-season coaches’ poll, while the Engineers gear up for 2016-’17 play ranked eighth in the pre-season poll.

Jan. 10-14, 2017 – FIS Freestyle Skiing World Cup. The world’s best freestyle skiers return to Lake Placid and Wilmington to compete in the FIS freestyle World Cup. Action takes place at the Olympic Jumping Complex and Whiteface Mountain.  The jumping complex will host the men and women’s aerials competitions, where athletes twist and soar as high as 60 feet in the air before landing, while Whiteface will be the site of the moguls’ competitions.

Feb. 24-26, 2017 – Lake Placid Nordic Festival. Lake Placid has a well-deserved reputation for world-class alpine skiing, but it also has some of the best Nordic skiing in the United States. The Lake Placid region has plenty to offer Nordic skiers and winter enthusiasts of all ages and abilities with its vast array of cross country trails. So whether you’re a beginner skier or an experienced racer, the place to be is in Lake Placid for its second Nordic Festival

Feb. 25, 2017 – Lake Placid Loppet and Kort Loppet. Nordic skiers will converge on the cross-country ski trails at Mt. van Hoevenberg to compete in the 33rd Lake Placid Loppet. Inclement weather claimed last winter’s event. Open to classical and freestyle skiers, the Loppet is a 50k race (31-miles) through the 1980 Olympic ski trails.  The vertical climb is just under 3,700 feet.

The 25k Kort Loppet, also open for classical and freestyle skiers, features a vertical climb of 1,850 feet.  The Lake Placid Loppet is part of the American Ski Marathon Series.

Feb. 26-March 3, 2017 – World Airlines Ski Championship. More than 100 airline teams will compete in alpine racing (slalom and giant slalom) at Whiteface Mountain and Nordic racing (distance and sprint) at Mt. van Hoevenberg. Mt. Hood held The first-ever World Airlines Championship, in 1976, and from there, this event has traveled the world.

March 4-11, 2017 – USSA Cross Country Junior National Championships. The nation’s best junior Nordic ski racers are coming to Lake Placid and Mt. Van Hoevenberg to compete in the 2017 USSA Cross Country Ski Junior National Championships. Fans will be treated to a glimpse of the future of Team USA as the best athletes under the age of 20 face off on the historic 1980 Olympic trails at Mt. Van Hoevenberg.         

March 17-18, 2017 – ECAC Men’s Hockey Championship Tournament.  The ECAC Hockey championships for a fourth straight postseason. The winner of this tournament receives an automatic bid to play in the NCAA championship tournament.  The ECAC Men’s Hockey championship tournament will be played on the famed Herb Brooks Arena 1980 Rink.

March 26-30, 2017 – Join players from the gold medal winning 1980 USA Hockey Team and participate in their third annual fantasy camp in wondrous and magnificent Lake Placid, host city of those historic 1980 Winter Games. Connect with the greatest sports moment of all time. Enjoy the competition. Meet and get to know players from that greatest of all teams in the relaxed and friendly atmosphere that is Lake Placid. Skate in the 1980 Rink -Herb Brooks Arena at the Lake Placid Olympic Center where we beat the Russians and shocked the sports and political worlds.

Other events this fall and winter include Whiteface opens for the 2016-’17 skiing and riding season (weather/conditions permitting), Nov. 18; IBSF Bobsled & Skeleton Int’l Training Week, Dec. 7-10; Miracle Holiday Classic Hockey Tournament, Dec. 16-18; New Year’s Ski Jumping, Dec. 29; NYSEF Ski Jump, Dec. 30; ISI Figure Skating Competition, Jan. 5-8; Northwood Hockey Tournament, Jan. 13-15; IBSF North America Cup Skeleton Racing, Jan. 15-20, IBSF North America Cup Bobsled Racing, Jan. 15-27, St. Lawrence University Winter Carnival, Jan. 20-22; IBSF Intercontinental Cup Skeleton Racing, Jan. 22-27; 37th Annual Empire State Winter Games, Feb. 2-5; Nor/Am Freestyle Aerials, Feb. 9-12; U.S. Speedskating Long Track Age Group National Championships, Feb. 11-12; Nor/Am Biathlon Competition, Feb. 17-18; Harlem Globetrotters, Feb. 22; Lake Placid International Pee-Wee Hockey Tournament, Feb. 24-16

Established in 1982, the New York State Olympic Regional Development Authority (ORDA) was created by the State of New York to manage the facilities used during the 1980 Olympic Winter Games at Lake Placid. ORDA operates Whiteface, Belleayre and Gore Mountain ski areas; the Olympic Sports Complex at Mt. Van Hoevenberg; the Olympic speedskating oval, Olympic jumping complex and Olympic arena. As host to international and national championships, the Authority has brought millions of athletes, spectator and participants to the region, resulting in significant economic development.
