Lake Placid Olympic Museum to Celebrate 40th Anniversary with New Exhibit and Mascot’s Birthday

LAKE PLACID, N.Y. --- The Lake Placid Olympic Museum, located in the Olympic Center, is excited to celebrate the opening of their new exhibit, Totally 80, on Thursday, Feb. 13, and Roni Raccoon’s 40th birthday.  The exhibit will commemorate the 40th anniversary of the 1980 Olympic Winter Games and explore how the logo and its graphics created an overall feel and identity for Lake Placid, N.Y.

To kick off the 40th anniversary celebration, an open and free reception for the public will be held at the Lake Placid Olympic Museum on February 13, from 6:30 – 8:30 p.m., Special themed cocktails, appetizers and a birthday cake for Roni will all be served. Nineteen-eighty attire is suggested for this event and the first 80 visitors to attend will receive an original 1980 Olympic ticket.

The Totally 80 exhibit is highlighted by local artist and designer, Robert Whitney’s graphics and photographs from the Lake Placid Games.  Artifacts from the museum’s collection and references to 1980 popular culture will also be a part of the throwback exhibit, sure to spark fond memories for many visitors and guests.

This exhibit was made possible through funding support from the Lake Placid Education Foundation and the Henry Uihlein II and Mildred A. Uihlein Foundation.

Established in 1982, the New York State Olympic Regional Development Authority (ORDA) was created by the State of New York to manage the facilities used during the 1980 Olympic Winter Games at Lake Placid. ORDA operates Whiteface, Belleayre and Gore Mountain ski areas; the Olympic Sports Complex at Mt. Van Hoevenberg; the Olympic speed skating oval, Olympic jumping complex and Olympic arena. As host to international and national championships, the Authority has brought millions of athletes, spectator and participants to the region, resulting in significant economic development.
