Steamfitters Recruit Apprentices

Long Island City, NY (March 7, 2019) - The Joint Steamfitting Apprenticeship and Training Committee Local Union #638 will conduct a recruitment from April 8, 2019 through April 19, 2019 for 300 steamfitter apprentices, the New York State Department of Labor announced today.

Applications will be available at the Steamfitters Industry Training Center, 32-32 48th Avenue, Long Island City, NY, from 8:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m., Monday through Friday, excluding legal holidays during recruitment period. Applications will be accepted during the recruitment period or until 2000 applications have been issued, whichever comes first. All applications must be received no later than 3:00 p.m. on May 7, 2019. Applicants must provide photo ID at time of obtaining and returning applications. Note: Applicants must pay $25 fee by certified check or money order made payable to the Steamfitters’ Education Fund. You may request this fee be waived. Fee waivers will be approved upon a showing of verifiable proof of financial need.

The Committee requires that applicants:

  • Must be at least 18 years old.
  • Must have a high school diploma or general equivalency diploma (such as a TASC or GED), prior to July 1, 2019 (date of birth and/or date of graduation must be blacked out).
  • Must submit to pre-admission drug testing, if selected to enter the steamfitters’ apprenticeship program (paid for by the sponsor). Must also submit to random drug testing during the 60-month program.
  • Must have reliable means of transportation to and from various job sites and related instruction. 
  • Must purchase text materials for use in trade-related classroom training as required. Approximate cost is $400, to be paid upon acceptance into the program.
  • Must interview as administered jointly by employer and employee representatives.
  • Must take an aptitude test.
  • Must provide DD-214, if applicable, after selection and prior to indenture (date of birth must be blacked out).

Apprentice programs registered with the Department of Labor must meet standards established by the Commissioner.  Under state law, sponsors of programs cannot discriminate against applicants because of race, creed, color, national origin, age, sex, disability or marital status. Women and minorities are encouraged to submit applications for apprenticeship programs. Sponsors of programs are required to adopt affirmative action plans for the recruitment of women and minorities.
