MEDIA ADVISORY: Photos Available of MTA Pride Month Celebrations

The Metropolitan Transportation Authority is honoring the 51st anniversary of the Stonewall Uprising on June 28, 1969 and the 50th Anniversary of the first New York City Pride March with visual tributes today

A New York City Transit designed Pride logo, featuring a heart detailed with the multi-colored subway lines, can be seen on trains serving the 1 line. Photos of the decals can be seen here. The NYC Transit subway and bus Twitter account avatars were also changed to feature a Pride logo today. The same was done on the commuter rail and MTA Headquarters accounts.

“Our subway and bus system is for all New Yorkers and I’m so proud of the diversity and acceptance we see throughout our 53,000 employees and millions of customers,” said NYC Transit Interim President Sarah Feinberg. “Pride month is a great opportunity to celebrate diversity and show that we stand with New York City’s LGBTQIA+ community.”

Metro-North Railroad is lighting up the Pershing Square Bridge today with multi-colored, rainbow LED lights for visitors, commuters and anyone driving by to see. The Pershing Square Bridge will light up 30 minutes before sunset and stay lit until 30 minutes after sunrise. The multi-colored lights and lettering were installed on the bridge in 2014. Since then the Metro-North Railroad has commemorated the Stonewall Uprising by lighting the bridge in rainbow colors. File photos of the bridge can be seen here.

“This is a great and very visible way to honor the historically significant Stonewall Riots,” said Catherine Rinaldi, Metro-North Railroad President. “We celebrate inclusivity and are proud to always support Pride Month.”

The Long Island Rail Road has been running a message of support and diversity all month long across all digital screens throughout the system to commemorate Pride Month and the 50th Anniversary of the first New York City Pride March. A photo of the digital screen message is available here.

“We promote, encourage and support diversity all throughout our system,” said Phil Eng, Long Island Rail Road President. “While we celebrate an important milestone with New Yorkers this month, the essential message here is our desire to embrace the notion of love and acceptance of all people every single day.”

MTA Bridges and Tunnels posted this message on the Robert F. Kennedy Bridge today, celebrating the LGBTQIA+ community and the 50th Anniversary of the first New York City Pride March. The sign can be seen as customers head to Manhattan and Queens from the Bronx.

I’m pleased to share this message to acknowledge this significant event in history,” said Daniel DeCrescenzo, Acting President of MTA Bridges and Tunnels. “Pride Month is an opportunity to show respect and support for individuals and groups who have fought for and inspired progress in our nation and society.”

MTA pride month merchandise is also being sold at the New York Transit Museum store
