Customers to See More Frequent 6 & 7 Subway Service During Rush Hours in 2019

Additional Trains on Flushing Line to Accommodate Ridership Demand in Queens and Diverted Riders During L Tunnel Reconstruction Project

MTA New York City Transit today announced that more scheduled service will be added to the 6 and 7 lines next year as part of ongoing efforts to improve service and match schedules to ridership demand. These service increases will go into effect in April 2019 to help ensure that customers affected by the l tunnel reconstruction project will benefit from the additional service.

“It’s extremely important for us to get the subway service alternatives right during the l tunnel reconstruction project, because we plan to accommodate up to 80 percent of diverted l riders on other subway lines,” said MTA NYC Transit President Andy Byford. “By adding service on the 7 line to prepare for more customers, we’re making sure that once the tunnel work begins, Brooklyn riders can get to where they need to go while Queens customers get the service they depend upon.”

NYC Transit plans to begin work on the Superstorm Sandy-damaged l tunnel between Brooklyn and Manhattan in April 2019, during which time the Flushing 7 line is expected to be one of several service alternatives for Brooklyn customers via the Court Sq 7egm station. To accommodate existing ridership demand on the 7 line, as well as to serve the projected increase of l customers, NYC Transit will be increasing 7 frequency during weekday mornings and evenings by a total of 14 additional roundtrips.

The following 7 line subway service will be added in April 2019:

  • Five additional round trips starting between 8 a.m. and 11 a.m. on weekdays.
  • Nine additional round trips starting between 5:30 p.m. and midnight on weekdays.

In addition to adding 7 service, NYC Transit will also be adding weekday peak hour service on the 6 line, which serves the Bronx and the heavily used Lexington Avenue corridor in Manhattan. NYC Transit routinely monitors, reviews and revises subway schedules to meet customer demand whenever possible and to make improvements to schedule reliability.

The following 6 line trips will be added during weekday peak commute hours, to be implemented in April 2019:

  • One additional round trips starting between 7 a.m. and 7:30 a.m. on weekdays.
  • One additional round trips starting between 5 p.m. and 5:30 p.m. on weekdays.
These increases in service are part of the NYC Transit Fast Forward Plan, which President Byford announced in May to outline how Transit will modernize the entire subway and bus system. To learn more about the plan, click here.
