Clarkson Men’s Hockey Tops RPI in First Meeting of Season

ECAC Hockey Foes Square off Jan. 7 in Lake Placid

TROY, N.Y. --- Clarkson University skated to a 5-2 road win Friday, Nov. 11, over ECAC Men’s Ice Hockey rival RPI, in the two schools’ first meeting of the season. Tied at two-apiece after two periods, Troy Josephs scored the game winner for the Golden Knights (5-5-1, 2-1-0) with 3 minutes, six seconds played in the third period.

Friday night’s game was the first of two match-ups between the two schools this season. They’re slated to meet next, Saturday, Jan. 7, 2017, at 7:30 p.m. in the Lake Placid Olympic Center.

Clarkson had lost three of its last four before last weekend. But after topping the Engineers (2-7-1, 1-4-0), they beat top seeded Union (8-3-2, 4-1-1) 3-1, Saturday, to move into a tie with Quinnipiac for third place in the conference.

RPI also fell to St. Lawrence University (6-4-2, 3-0-1) 3-1, Saturday, and dropped into a three-way tie for ninth place in the conference standings with Yale and Brown.

Union College leads the ECAC Hockey Conference after three weekends of play with nine points, followed by St. Lawrence, just two points back. Clarkson and Quinnipiac each have six points, one more than fifth seeded Harvard and Cornell, each with five points. Dartmouth sits in seventh place, with four points and Colgate is eighth with three points. Princeton has just one point in conference play and sits in 12th position.

On March 17-18, 2017, the top four post season tournament teams will square off in Lake Placid to play for the ECAC Hockey Championship crown and an automatic berth into the NCAA National Championship Tournament.
