Metro-North Installs New Haverstraw Ferry Dock

Streamlined, Modern Structure Replaces Aging Dock in Rockland County

Metro-North Railroad today announced that, working with its ferry contractor, NYWaterway, it has replaced the aging Haverstraw Ferry Dock with a new, safer, modern structure.  The new dock is located at the same location as the original, but occupies a smaller footprint than its predecessor, which was nearly two decades old and long past its useful life. The new dock has a 20-year expected useful life.

The new dock is more stable than the old one due to its construction, and is equipped with a new counterweighted loading ramp.   Ferry personnel need to simply unlatch it and flip it down to allow customers to board or disembark the ferry. Through efficient project management, the dock and loading ramp were replaced over a single weekend, with no disruption to regular service.

The ferry between Haverstraw and Ossining offers Rockland County residents a convenient way to catch a Metro-North train. Every day, about 500 customers commute on the Haverstraw ferry to Ossining, where they then connect with Metro-North service for trains headed to Grand Central Terminal or Croton-Harmon and Poughkeepsie.

The new Haverstraw Ferry dock was paid for using $1.1 million in Federal Highway Administration funds, with support from the New York State Deptartment of Transportation and the Village of Haverstraw.

“We’re always looking to find ways to improve the commuting experience for our West of Hudson customers,” said Catherine Rinaldi, Metro-North President. “This new dock adds a bit more convenience to their daily commute, enhances safety, and is a valuable investment for our Rockland County customers.”
