PSC Seeks Comment Regarding Energy Storage Roadmap

Energy Storage is Crucial Element in a Modern, Resilient and Clean Electric Grid

ALBANY — The New York State Public Service Commission (Commission) announced today that it was seeking comment on the Energy Storage Roadmap. Energy storage is not only crucial to achieving the State’s goal of 50 percent renewable energy by 2030, it will improve the resiliency of the grid in the face of extreme weather events and other emergency situations. The comprehensive plan is also a vital component to build a clean, resilient, and affordable energy system for all New Yorkers to combat climate change.

Developed by Department of Public Service (DPS) and the New York State Energy Research and Development Authority (NYSERDA) with input from numerous stakeholders, the Roadmap outlines market-supported policy, regulatory, and programmatic actions necessary to achieve the State’s near-term energy storage installment goals, and recommendations for the Commission to consider when designing the energy storage program.

The Roadmap specifically supports the State’s initiative to deploy 1,500 megawatts (MW) of energy storage by 2025 — the equivalent electricity demand of one-fifth of all New York homes — and a secondary energy storage deployment target for 2030.

DPS and NYSERDA have held several technical conferences in collaboration with the New York Green Bank, the New York Independent System Operator, Long Island Power Authority, and PSEG Long Island to present the Roadmap recommendations and seek input from stakeholders.

With the issuance of the Roadmap on the Commission sought public comment, concurrently Department staff continued to work with interested stakeholders to develop final recommendations for Commission consideration. The comment period on the report ends on Wednesday, October 31, 2018. The report was issued on June 21, 2018.
