MTA to Test New Signal Room and Interlocking as Part of Broader Modernization of F Line in Southern Brooklyn

New Infrastructure will Allow Crews to Respond Faster to Disruptions and Improve Reliability 

For One Week in Each Direction, f Trains will Operate Express Between 18th Av and Avenue X in Brooklyn 

The Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) today announced that crews will test a new signal room south of the Kings Highway f station, and new solid-state interlocking (SSI) equipment, as part of a broader modernization of the f line that includes modern computer-based signaling in Brooklyn. For one week in each direction in August and September, f trains will operate express between 18th Av and Avenue X in Brooklyn.  

“We are committed to adding modernized signals and providing the best service possible for our customers in Brooklyn,” said Janno Lieber, President of MTA Construction & Development. “It is important that this project, and projects like it, have continued safely during the COVID-19 pandemic.” 

This work complements and is necessary for a related project to replace 70-year-old signals between Church Av and Coney Island with a modern Communications Based Train Control (CBTC) system. Combined, the projects will bring greater reliability to the entire f line in Brooklyn, Manhattan and Queens. 

Replacement of the Kings Highway Interlocking, which governs how trains switch tracks at a key location along the f line in Brooklyn, and the addition of three new signal facilities at Ditmas Av, Bay Parkway and Avenue X, began in 2017. The new infrastructure will allow personnel to respond faster with alternative service options when there are disruptions, providing customers a better means to complete their trips.  

Service details for Monday, Aug. 31 at 5 a.m. to Friday, Sept. 4 at 10 p.m.:  

  • Manhattan-bound f service will operate express between Avenue X and 18th Avenue.
  • Manhattan-bound f trains will skip Avenue U, Avenue P, Avenue N, Bay Parkway and Avenue I.  
  • Customers traveling to skipped stations should take the f to Kings Highway or 18th Ave and transfer to a Coney Island-bound f.  
  • Customers traveling from these stations should take the f to Kings Highway or Avenue X and transfer to a Manhattan-bound f.  
  • Customers should also consider using nearby b/q or n stations.  

Service details for Monday, Sept. 21 at 5 a.m. to Friday, Sept. 25 at 10 p.m.:   

  • Coney Island-bound f service will operate express between 18th Avenue and Avenue X.
  • Coney Island bound f trains will skip Avenue I, Bay Parkway, Avenue N, Avenue P and Avenue U.
  • Customers from skipped stations should take a Manhattan-bound f to Kings Highway or 18th Ave and transfer to Coney Island-bound f.   
  • Customers traveling to skipped stations should take the f to Kings Highway or Avenue X and transfer to Manhattan-bound f.  
  • Customers should also consider using nearby b/q or n stations.  

Customer service notifications will be made on trains, posted at affected stations and posted on the MTA website, the MYmta app and social media. Customers can also sign up for text and email alerts at www.myMTAalerts.com.  

Weekend work continues on the F line, and this weekday work is a supplement to that. More information can be found on the project website.
