Lake Placid Unveils Banner in Olympic Center Commemorating the 1980 U.S. Olympic Figure Skating Team

LAKE PLACID, N.Y. (FEBRUARY 18, 2020) --- Thirteen members of the 1980 U.S. Olympic figure skating team returned to Lake Placid, N.Y. today, Tuesday, Feb. 18, to take part in the village’s 40th anniversary of the XIII Olympic Winter Games.

Scott Hamilton, 1980 U.S. Olympic team Opening Ceremony Flag Bearer and 1984 Olympic gold medalist; Linda Fratianne, 1980 women’s Olympic figure skating silver medalist; Charles Tickner, 1980 men’s Olympic figure skating bronze medalist; Tai Babilonia, David Santee, Sandy Lenz Jackson, Caitlin Carruthers Conrad and Peter Carruthers, 1984 Olympic pairs silver medalists; Sheryl Franks and Michael Botticelli, Lisa-Marie Allen, John Summers and Stacey Smith all returned to the two-time Olympic village.

Today, the New York State Olympic Regional Development Authority (ORDA) honored the historic squad, also known as the “Dream Team,” by raising a commemorative banner to the rafters of the Olympic Center’s Herb Brooks Arena, 1980 Rink.

Events and activities continue through Monday, Feb. 24, as Lake Placid celebrates the 40th anniversary of the 1980 Winter Games. These Games are best known for the “Miracle on Ice,” when the United States topped the former Soviet Union, 4-3, en route to their improbable Olympic gold medal and for U.S. speed skater Eric Heiden’s five Olympic gold medal races, all in record time.
