Finishing Trades Recruit Apprentices

Syracuse, NY (February 28, 2020) - The Finishing Trades Institute of Western and Central New York (Syracuse) will conduct a recruitment from March 4, 2020 through March 3, 2021 for three Painter, Decorator, Paperhanger apprentices and six Dry Wall Taper (Finisher) apprentices, the New York State Department of Labor announced today.

Please note that the openings listed for apprentices represent the total number for three recruitment regions, the Finger Lakes, Central, and Mohawk Valley regions of the state. 

Applications can be obtained on the Finishing Trade’s website (www.dc4.org) during the recruitment period. Applications can also be obtained and returned in person from Monday through Friday, excluding legal holidays, during the recruitment period at:

  • 615 W. Genesee Street, Syracuse, NY from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.
  • 585 Aero Drive, Cheektowaga, NY from 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

Completed applications can also be mailed to: Finishing Trades Institute of Western & Central New York, 585 Aero Drive, Cheektowaga, NY 14225 or emailed to ftiwcny@dc4.org. Applications must be received no later than 03/03/21. Applicants will be contacted to schedule an interview.

The Committee requires that applicants:

  • Must be at least 17 years old.
  • Must attest in writing that they are physically capable of performing the work of the trade, which may include:
    • Climbing and working from ladders, scaffolds, poles, and towers.
    • Crawling and working in confined spaces.
    • Lifting and carrying 50 to 100 pounds.
    • Walking fast on level surfaces.
  • Must pass a drug screening, at the expense of the sponsor, after selection and prior to enrollment in apprenticeship. 
  • Must possess a valid NYS driver’s license in order to operate company vehicles.
  • Must have access to reliable transportation to and from various job sites and required classes at the approved school. Job sites are throughout Western New York.  Required classes will be in Buffalo, NY, at one-week intervals, four times each year.
  • Must provide DD-214, Certificate of Release or Discharge from Active Duty, if applicable, after selection and prior to enrollment in apprenticeship.

Apprentice programs registered with the Department of Labor must meet standards established by the Commissioner. Under state law, sponsors of programs cannot discriminate against applicants because of race, creed, color, national origin, age, sex, disability, or marital status. Women and minorities are encouraged to submit applications for apprenticeship programs. Sponsors of programs are required to adopt affirmative action plans for the recruitment of women and minorities.
