Ironworkers Recruit Apprentices

Wallkill, NY (September 6, 2013) -- The International Association of Bridge, Structural, Ornamental & Reinforcing Iron Workers, Local Union #17-Newburgh, will conduct a recruitment from September 13, 2013 through September 12, 2014 for 10 ironworker (outside) apprentices, State Labor Commissioner Peter M Rivera announced today. 

Applications will be available at Local Union #417, 583 Route 32, Wallkill, NY from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. and 1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m., Monday through Friday, excluding legal holidays, during the recruitment period. Applications must be completed in person.

Applicants must provide the following documentation and information, once accepted into the program: birth certificate, Social Security card, NYS driver's license, high school diploma or G.E.D, proof of permanent residence (which must be within jurisdiction as indicated below). Proof of reliable transportation and random drug testing is a mandatory part of this program.

The Committee requires that applicants:

  • Must be at least 18 years old.
  • Must have a high school diploma or general equivalency diploma (G.E.D.).
  • Must be physically able to perform the work as determined by a physical agility test conducted by JAC Committee. Applicants will be required to:
    • Climb a ladder, climb a column, walk a beam, pull a bucket with 40 pounds, carry and move reinforcing rods from one location to another.
    • Show any trade-related skills they might have, such as welding, burning, tying reinforcing bars.
  • Must take post-employment drug test at an approved facility at union's expense, if required.
  • Must have a valid driver's license and reliable means of transportation to and from any job in six-county jurisdiction.
  • Must be a resident of one of the following counties: Orange, Ulster, Sullivan, Rockland, Dutchess or Putnam.
  • Must have ability to purchase tools as needed (approx. $50.00).
  • Must be able to read a ruler.
  • Must have hand-eye coordination.
  • Must be able to calculate some basic applications and take a math test.
  • Must have ability to lift and carry a minimum of 80 pounds; climb ladders up to 40 feet; and not be afraid of heights.

Apprentice programs registered with the Department of Labor must meet standards established by the Commissioner.  Under state law, sponsors of programs cannot discriminate against applicants because of race, creed, color, national origin, age, sex, disability or marital status.  Women and minorities are encouraged to submit applications for apprenticeship programs.  Sponsors of programs are required to adopt affirmative action plans for the recruitment of women and minorities.
