MTA Elevator and Escalator Upgrades at Grand Central Get Underway on Monday, Sept. 20

Escalators and Elevators in 42nd Street Passage Will be Out of Service to Accommodate Modernization Project

The Metropolitan Transportation Authority reminds customers that on Monday, Sept. 30, crews will begin upgrading the escalators and elevators in the 42nd Street passage in Grand Central. This enhancement is a new phase in the overall modernization of Grand Central, and follows the completion of several other stair expansion and elevator projects.

The rebuilt and renewed escalators and elevators will have multiple benefits for customers, including: greater reliability, 24-hour safety and operational monitoring and intercoms, and larger elevator cabs.

Customers should expect nearby parts of Grand Central to be slightly more crowded, as customers find new paths to exit and enter the building. The MTA encourages customers to use the Lexington Avenue passage, and for an accessible route, use Elevator 296, which is located outside of the terminal on Lexington Avenue.

The MTA appreciates the patience of our customers as we work to improve our infrastructure and the daily commuting experience.

Alternate accessible travel route details are as follows:
At street level in Grand Central Terminal:
Use the nearby exit to the street, then turn left to go along 42nd Street to Lexington Avenue. At Lexington, turn left and proceed north to elevator there (EL-296), located just north of the stairway entrance to the subway.

At mezzanine level in Grand Central Terminal:
See an agent if you need to re-enter the system. Follow the signs to the other elevator (EL-296) at the other side of the mezzanine Take elevator 296 up to street level. At street level, turn right out of the elevator onto Lexington Ave, proceed south, and turn right to 42nd Street. Proceed west toward the accessible entrance to Grand Central Terminal. Customers needing 7 train service should take a westbound M42 bus to Times Sq-42 St Station
