Sheet Metal Workers Recruit Apprentices

Rochester, NY (April 3, 2019) – The Joint Apprenticeship and Training Committee for Sheet Metal Workers, Local Union #46, will conduct a recruitment from June 4, 2019 through May 5, 2020 for 10 sheet metal worker apprentices, the New York State Department of Labor announced today.

Applications may be obtained at Local Union #46, 244 Paul Road, Rochester, NY from 9:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. and 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. on the first Tuesday of each month, excluding legal holidays, during the recruitment period. Applicants must apply in person at the address listed above; applications may not leave the premises.

The Committee requires that applicants:

  • Must be at least 18 years old.
  • Must have a high school diploma or a high school equivalency diploma (such as TASC or GED), with one year of algebra with a passing grade in Math Course I or Math Course II; or a minimum of 55 on the TASC or GED math test.
  • Must sign an affidavit attesting that they are physically able to perform the work of a sheet metal worker. Work in the sheet metal industry may be physical and strenuous.  It includes:
    • Must climb ladders, scaffolds and roofs.
    • Must work at great heights.
    • Must lift materials in excess of 70 lbs.
    • Must be able to work outdoors in all types of weather conditions.
  • Must take and pass a drug test upon offer of employment. Additional drug tests may be administered at any time during the apprenticeship program. Drug testing is paid for by the sponsor.
  • Must have a valid NYS driver’s license in order to drive company vehicles.
  • Must have reliable transportation to and from various job sites and related instruction classes.
  • Must be a resident, of at least one year, within the jurisdiction of Local Union #46, which includes the counties of Monroe, Wayne, Livingston, Ontario, Seneca, or Yates.

Apprentice programs registered with the Department of Labor must meet standards established by the Commissioner. Under state law, sponsors of programs cannot discriminate against applicants because of race, creed, color, national origin, age, sex, disability, or marital status. Women and minorities are encouraged to submit applications for apprenticeship programs. Sponsors of programs are required to adopt affirmative action plans for the recruitment of women and minorities.
