Service Changes are Part of Subway Action Plan, Station Repairs and Other Ongoing Maintenance, and Upgrade Work for Improvements on Multiple Lines

This weekend, work crews will be dispersed throughout the entire subway system to perform a variety of critical tasks in the areas of track replacement and maintenance, signal modernization, station enhancements, electrical upgrades and communication improvements.  All this work is aligned with the MTA Subway Action Plan, a comprehensive plan to stabilize and modernize the subway system by attacking the key drivers of 79 percent of delay-causing major incidents and strategically targeting additional personnel and equipment to focus on critical parts of the system.

At all times until winter 2018-19, downtown trains skip 238 St due to station improvements.  As an alternative, take the Bx9 to 231 St, or take an uptown train to 242 St and transfer to a downtown . 

From 11:45 p.m. Friday, Oct. 19 to 5 a.m. Monday, Oct. 22, downtown trains skip Christopher St, Houston St, Canal St, and Franklin St due to electrical improvements.  As an alternative, use an uptown  or  train to complete your trip.  Transfer at Chambers St or 14 St. 

From 3:45 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 20 to 10 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 21, free shuttle buses replace  trains between 241 St and Nereid Av due to track maintenance.   trains will run between Flatbush Av-Brooklyn College and Nereid Av.  Free shuttle buses will run between 241 St and Nereid Av, making all station stops.  Transfer between free shuttle buses and trains at Nereid Av. 

From 4 a.m. to 8 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 20,  trains will bypass Eastern Parkway-Brooklyn Museum in both directions due to the Brooklyn Marathon & Half Marathon.  As an alternative, use nearby Grand Army Plaza or Franklin Av  stations. 

At all times until November 2018, trains will skip 145 St in both directions due to MTA’s Enhanced Station Initiative project.  The 145 St station opened more than a century ago in 1904.  As crews make critical repairs to the station infrastructure such as concrete and metal platforms, stairs, beams and columns, they will also modernize the station with enhancements to all entrances including stairs, LED lighting, digital signage providing real-time service information, and new turnstile areas with security cameras and brighter lighting.  Countdown clocks and Help Points, which allow customers to communicate quickly with staff for assistance or emergencies, will be installed.  New station furniture and platform safety enhancements such as tactile edge warning strips also will be installed to improve customer safety.  For subway service, use nearby stations at 148 St , 145 St , or 135 St .  Use M7 and M102 buses along Lenox Av, or the Bx19 along 145 St and transfer to the subway with a MetroCard.  For a graphical guide to these alternate travel directions, click here. 

From 9:45 p.m. Friday, Oct. 19 to 5 a.m. Monday, Oct. 22,  train will run to/from New Lots Av all weekend, providing alternate service and due to track maintenance in the Joralemon tube.

From 9:45 p.m. Friday, Oct. 19 to 5 a.m. Monday, Oct. 22,  train will not run between New Lots Av and Brooklyn Bridge-City Hall due to track maintenance in the Joralemon tube.  Take  or  trains instead.   trains will run between Woodlawn and Brooklyn Bridge, making all local stops.  For service to Lower Manhattan, transfer to the  at Brooklyn Bridge-City Hall.  For service between Manhattan and Brooklyn, use the  via transfer at Fulton St . 

From 3:45 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 19 to 10 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 21, downtown trains skip Mt Eden, 170 St, 167 St, and 161 St due to track replacement between 167 St and 161 St.  As an alternative, use an uptown  train to complete your trip.  Transfer at 149 St-Grand Concourse or Burnside Av. 

From 8 a.m. to 8:30 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 20, and from 11 a.m. to 7:30 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 21, trains run every 16 minutes between 125 St and Woodlawn due to track replacement between 167 St and 161 St.  The last stop for some  trains headed towards Woodlawn is 125 St.  Transfer at 125 St to continue your trip.

At all times until December 2018,  trains will skip 28 St in both directions due to MTA’s Enhanced Station Initiative project.   The 28 St station is one of the oldest in the subway system, opening in October 1904.  See the  entry above for project details.  For alternate service, use the nearby  stations along Park Avenue South at 33 St or 23 St.  Or, use the nearby 28 St  station on Broadway.  Local buses are also available along Lexington and Madison avenues.  For a graphical guide to these alternate travel directions, click here.

Beginning 8:30 p.m. Friday, Oct. 19,  service ends early between E 180 St and Bowling Green due to track maintenance in the Joralemon tube. As an alternative, take the  or  instead. 

From 6 a.m. to 11 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 20, and from 8 a.m. to 11 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 21,  and  trains provide  service between Bowling Green and Grand Central-42 St due to track maintenance in the Joralemon tube.  trains will run between E 180 St and Grand Central-42 St.  As an alternative, use the  or  to trains to complete your trip, via transfer at Grand Central-42 St  or Canal St .  As a reminder,  train will not stop at Fulton St, Wall St and Bowling Green this weekend. 

MTA New York City Transit is performing critical work each weekend this month to upgrade the  line with Communications Based Train Control (CBTC) signaling.  Once installed on the  line by the end of this year, CBTC will allow for more frequent and more reliable service for all users of the  line, which currently serves approximately 500,000 customers per weekday between Queens and Manhattan.  The recently announced addition of more daily service to the 7 line for next year, for example, is incumbent upon the successful installation of CBTC on the line.  Due to the 24/7 nature of the New York City subway system and patterns of high ridership during peak weekday hours, work such as this must be done at times of lower than average ridership, such as weekends.  This weekend in support of this critical CBTC installation work to keep the project on track for completion by the end of this year, the  train will run as follows:

From 12:15 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 20, to 4:30 a.m. Monday, Oct. 22, Queensboro Plaza-bound trains run express from 74 St-Broadway to Queensboro Plaza.  As an alternative, use a Flushing Main St-bound  train to complete your trip.  Transfer at Queensboro Plaza, 61 St-Woodside or 74 St-Broadway.   

From 12:15 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 20, to 4:30 a.m. Monday, Oct. 22, free shuttle buses and  replace  trains between 34 St-Hudson Yards and Queensboro Plaza.

•  trains will not run in Manhattan or Long Island City. Use  or  trains for service between Manhattan and Queens.  Transfer at Queensboro Plaza  or 74 St-Roosevelt Av .
• Free Shuttle buses will run frequently – every five minutes during times of peak ridership – in two sections: In Manhattan between Times Square-42 St and 34 St-Hudson Yards, and in Queens between Queensboro Plaza and Vernon Blvd-Jackson Av.
• Additional train service is being scheduled on the  and  to further help customers. The 42 St  Shuttle will operate overnight (it normally does not), from 12:01 a.m. to 6 a.m. Saturday to Sunday, Oct. 20 to Oct. 22, and  trains run from 7 a.m. to 9 p.m. Saturday and from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. Sunday, between Whitehall St and Ditmars Blvd (the  does not normally run on weekends).

From 8:30 p.m. Friday, Oct. 19,  service will end early due to station enhancements at 145 St. As an alternative, take the  and/or .  As a reminder,  service does not run on weekends. 

At all times until October 2018,  trains will skip 86 St in both directions due to MTA’s Enhanced Station Initiative project.  For project details or click here.

• For service to/from 86 St, use nearby  stations at 81 St-Museum of Natural History and 96 St.  Or take the  at 86 St, along Broadway.  Use an M10 bus along Frederick Douglass Blvd and transfer to the  ( overnight) at 81 St or 96 St with MetroCard.

Customers transferring to another bus can ask the M10 bus operator for a MetroCard Bus Transfer, which can be used for another local bus ride within two hours.  For return trips, ask the station agent for a transfer to the bus.

At all times until January 2019,  trains will skip 167 St in both directions due to MTA’s Enhanced Station Initiative project.  As an alternative, customers are advised to use the nearby stations at 170 St , 167 St , or 161 St-Yankee Stadium.  Use the Bx1 or Bx2 along Grand Concourse and transfer to the subway at 170 St  or 161 St-Yankee Stadium with a MetroCard.  Use the Bx35 along E 167 St and transfer to the  at 167 St station with a MetroCard.  For transfers to another bus, ask the bus operator for a MetroCard Bus Transfer, which can be used on another local bus ride within two hours.  For return trips, ask the station agent for a transfer to the bus.  For a graphical guide to these alternate travel directions, click here.

At all times until December 2018, trains will skip 174-175 Sts in both directions due to MTA’s Enhanced Station Initiative project.  As an alternative, customers are advised to use the nearby Tremont Av  or 170 St  stations.  Use the Bx1 or Bx2 along Grand Concourse and transfer to  trains at Tremont Av or 170 St with a MetroCard.  For either station, customers transferring to another bus can ask the driver for a MetroCard Bus Transfer, which can be used on another local bus ride within two hours.  For return trips, ask the station agent at the Tremont Av  or 170 St  station for a transfer to the bus.  For a graphical guide to these alternate travel directions, and listing of nearby bus routes, click here. 

At all times until December 2018,  trains will skip 57 St in both directions due to MTA’s Enhanced Station Initiative project.  When this project is completed, customers will benefit from new station entrances enhanced with digital signage providing real-time information, countdown clocks, new railings or canopies, and brighter, more energy-efficient lighting, upgraded turnstile areas with glass barriers, security cameras, new information centers and digital dashboards.  Platforms will be outfitted with new platform edge warning strips, accessible boarding areas, new seating furniture, digital dashboards with wayfinding information and new countdown clocks.  For alternate service, use nearby stations at 57 St-7 Av , 5 Av/59 St , 7 Av , 5 Av/53 St , or 47-50 Sts .  Local buses are also available along Fifth Avenue, Sixth Avenue and 57^th Street.  For a graphical guide to these alternate travel directions, and listing of nearby bus routes, click here. 

From 11:45 p.m. Friday, Oct. 19, to 5 a.m. Monday, Oct. 22, Coney Island-Stillwell Av bound  trains are rerouted via the  line after 36 St to 47-50 St due to ongoing signal modernization work along the Queens Boulevard Line.  Use a Jamaica-bound  train to complete your trip via transfer at 47-50 Sts or Roosevelt Av.  For Lexington Av/63 St, take the  or a Jamaica-bound .  Transfer at 47-50 Sts.   

At all times until December 2018, trains will skip 23 St in both directions due to due to MTA’s Enhanced Station Initiative project.  The 23 St station opened around the time of World War II, in December 1940.  Crews are making extensive repairs to fix structural defects and deterioration, and include functional station improvements, leading to an enhanced customer experience for approximately 31,000 daily riders who use the station.  For alternate service, use the nearby 34 St-Herald Sq or 14 St stations along Sixth Avenue.  Or, use the nearby 23 St  station on Broadway.  Local buses are also available along Sixth and Seventh avenues.  For a graphical guide to these alternate travel directions, and listing of nearby bus routes, click here. 

At all times until Fall 2018, Jamaica Center Parsons/Archer-bound trains skip 104 St and 121 St due to station rehabilitation work.  Use a Manhattan-bound  train to complete your trip.  Transfer at Sutphin Blvd, 111 St or Woodhaven Blvd. 

From 3:45 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 20, to 10 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 21, free shuttle buses and  trains replace  trains between Crescent St and Jamaica Center due to station rehabilitation at 104 St and 121 St.   service will operate between Broad St and Crescent St.  Free shuttle buses will make all station stops between Crescent St and 121 St, and connect with the  at Jamaica-Van Wyck.  Transfer between trains and free shuttle buses at Jamaica-Van Wyck , and/or Crescent St .  As a reminder, the Jamaica Center-bound platforms at 104 St and 121 St are closed for renovations. 

Beginning approximately 10:45 p.m. Friday, Oct. 19, to 5 a.m. Monday, Oct. 22,  service is suspended in both directions between 8 Av and Broadway Junction due to extensive track maintenance at 3 Av and Graham Av, and signal improvements and station work at Bedford Av.  In 2012, the Canarsie Tunnel suffered the devastating effects of Hurricane Sandy when it was flooded with seven million gallons of salt water, damaging vital infrastructure and systems such as power, signal and communication cables, tracks, switches, lighting, cable ducts and bench walls in the 7,110-foot tunnel.  While we were able to drain the tubes and restore service just 10 days after the storm, it was clear that the damage Sandy left in its wake simply must be addressed and a full reconstruction of the tunnel is required.  This weekend’s improvement work will help prepare the  line for reliable service when the  tunnel between Brooklyn and Manhattan is reconstructed in 2019, causing  trains to run in Brooklyn only for 15 months.

To minimize the impact of these preparations, the work is being done on weekends when ridership is significantly lower.  This weekend,  trains will not run between 8 Av and Broadway Junction.   trains will run between Rockaway Pkwy and Broadway Junction.  M14 and free shuttle buses will provide alternate service between 8 Av and Broadway Junction.   Free shuttle buses will operate along the following three routes: between Marcy Av  and Lorimer St; between Lorimer St and Myrtle-Wyckoff Avs; between Myrtle-Wyckoff Avs and Broadway Junction.  Transfer between trains and buses at Myrtle Wyckoff Avs , Broadway Junction , or Marcy Av .  Additional nearby subway and local bus service is also provided to accommodate customers.   trains will provide additional service from 10 p.m. Friday, Oct. 19 to 5 a.m. Monday, Oct. 22, and will operate between Metropolitan Av and 47-50 Sts, and via the  line between Lexington Av/63 St and 96 St.  

From 10 p.m. Friday, Oct. 19 to 5 a.m. Monday, Oct. 22,  trains will provide alternative service due to track maintenance on the  lines, and will run between Metropolitan Av and 47-50 Sts, and via the  line between Lexington Av/63 St and 96 St, all weekend.  

At all times until fall 2018, Coney Island-Stillwell Av bound trains skip Fort Hamilton Pkwy, New Utrecht Av, 18 Av, 20 Av, Kings Hwy, Avenue U and 86 St due to station rehabilitation work at nine stations on the Sea Beach Line.  When finished, this will yield a better travel experience for customers, including the installation of elevators at 8 Av and New Utrecht Av stations, providing mobility impaired customers with better accessibility, upgraded communication systems, installation of Help Point intercoms, new stairways and handrails, reconstructed platforms and overpasses, repairs to canopies and columns, and artwork.

• For service to these stations, take the Coney Island-Stillwell Av bound to Bay Pkwy or Coney Island-Stillwell Av and transfer to a Manhattan-bound train.
• For service from these stations, take a Manhattan-bound train to Bay Pkwy or 8 Av and transfer to a Coney Island-Stillwell Av bound train.
• For New Utrecht Av-62 St, take the  Transfer between  and  trains at 36 St or Coney Island-Stillwell Av.

At all times until July 2019, trains will run local in both directions between 59 St and 36 St in Brooklyn due to structural rehabilitation work to repair and replace steel columns, lighting, ventilators, and deteriorated concrete, and perform water mitigation work to address water seepage in the express tunnel between the 59 St and 36 St stations.   trains will stop at 53 St and 45 St in both directions.

At all times until February 2019, trains will skip Broadway and 39 Av in both directions due to MTA’s Enhanced Station Initiative project.  When this project is completed, customers will benefit from critical structural and safety repairs and improvements to concrete and steel features such as columns, beams, platforms, walls and stairs. There will also be other improvements and upgrades such as improved waterproofing, a reconfigured mezzanine area including new glass barriers, new security cameras, LED lighting for increased light and energy efficiency, and enhanced signage for easier navigation including digital, real-time service change and train and bus arrival information.  For alternate service, use the nearby open Astoria line stations at 30 Av, 36 Av, or Queensboro Plaza via the Q102 bus.  For a graphical guide to these alternate travel directions, click here. 

From 9:45 p.m. Friday, Oct. 19, to 5 a.m. Monday, Oct. 22, Astoria-bound  trains skip 36 Av and 30 Av due to station enhancements at 39 Av and Broadway.  Use a Coney Island-bound  train to complete your trip.  Transfer at Astoria Blvd or Queensboro Plaza.  As a reminder, trains skip Broadway and 39 Av in both directions until February 2019 due to station renovations. 

From 9:45 p.m. Friday, Oct. 19, to 5 a.m. Monday, Oct. 22, free shuttle buses and  trains replace  trains between Prospect Park and 96 St due to track maintenance near the 7 Av station.   trains will run between Coney Island-Stillwell Av and Prospect Park.   trains will run between to/from the 96 St  station all weekend.  Consider using  trains for service to/from Coney Island-Stillwell Av.  Transfer between  trains and  trains at 34 St-Herald Sq.  In Brooklyn, free shuttle buses will make all  line station stops between Prospect Park and Atlantic Av-Barclays Ctr.  Transfer between  trains and free shuttle buses at Prospect Park, and/or between buses and  trains at Atlantic Av-Barclays Ctr. 

Due to road closures in effect for the Brooklyn Marathon & Half Marathon, Atlantic Av-Barclays Ctr bound free shuttle buses will not stop at the 7 Av station from 9:45 p.m. Friday, Oct. 19 until 10 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 21.  For service from this station, use the nearby Bergen St  station.  After 10 a.m. on Saturday, Oct. 21, Atlantic Av-Barclay Ctr-bound free shuttle buses to will resume stopping at the 7 Av station until 5 a.m. Monday, Oct. 22.  Announcements will be made in stations and on buses, and wayfinders and other customer service personnel will be deployed at strategic locations to help customers complete their trips.

From 10:45 p.m. Friday, Oct. 19 to 5 a.m. Monday, Oct. 22, free shuttle buses and  trains replace  trains between Bay Ridge-95 St and 36 St due to station improvements.   trains will run days/evenings between 71 Av and 36 St in Brooklyn, and is then rerouted via the  line to/from the 9 Av station, which will be the last stop.  Free shuttle buses will make all  line station stops between Bay Ridge-95 St and 59 St all weekend.  Late night  service between Brooklyn and Whitehall St in Lower Manhattan is suspended this weekend.  As an alternative take the  and/or free shuttle buses.  Transfer between  trains and free shuttle buses at 59 St, and/or between  and  trains at 36 St. 

From 12:01 a.m. to 6 a.m. Saturday to Monday, Oct. 20 to Oct. 22, the 42 St  Shuttle will operate overnight to provide alternate service due to signal modernization on the Flushing Line. See this press release for details.
